Overview
ISO 9437:1986 is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies the technical characteristics and dimensions of Matrosov anchors used specifically for inland vessels. This standard applies to shipbuilding practices related to inland navigation, providing uniform specifications to ensure consistency, safety, and reliability in anchoring systems employed on inland waterways vessels.
First published in December 1986, ISO 9437 replaces the earlier ISO 4050/2-1980 standard, incorporating minor revisions that adapt to manufacturing and industry needs. It is developed under ISO Technical Committee ISO/TC 8, which focuses on shipbuilding and marine structures, emphasizing anchoring equipment dimensions and quality.
Key Topics
Scope and Application: The standard covers Matrosov anchors designed primarily for inland vessels. It provides guidance on their technical characteristics and exact dimensions.
Anchor Classification: Matrosov anchors are classified into two types based on their manufacturing process:
- Type A: Cast steel anchors
- Type B: Welded anchors
Technical Specifications:
- Detailed dimensional requirements presented through figures and tables (Figures 1 and 2; Tables 1 and 2).
- Dimensions include measurements such as length, width, thickness, and mass.
- Mass tolerances permitted are ±4%, while dimensional tolerances are ±3%, with allowances coordinated with classification societies.
Types of Data Included:
- Precise millimeter-level dimensions for various anchor sizes.
- Mass in kilograms for different anchor variants.
- Angular measurements relevant for anchor design (degrees).
Applications
ISO 9437:1986 serves as an essential reference for manufacturers, shipbuilders, classification societies, and regulatory authorities involved in inland vessel construction and maintenance. Its applications include:
Design and Manufacture of Anchors: Provides manufacturers with exact dimensioning and material specifications to produce Matrosov anchors that comply with international standards.
Quality Control and Compliance: Assists classification societies and regulatory bodies in verifying that anchors meet the technical requirements for inland vessels, enhancing operational safety.
Maintenance and Replacement: Helps ship operators and repair yards identify suitable replacement anchors by referencing standardized dimensions and types.
Inland Navigation Safety: By standardizing anchor specifications, ISO 9437 contributes to safer mooring and anchoring operations in rivers, canals, and other inland waterways.
Related Standards
For professionals working with ISO 9437, familiarity with related shipbuilding and anchoring standards is beneficial:
- ISO 4050 – Previous standards on inland vessel anchors, now replaced by ISO 9437.
- ISO/TC 8 Series – Other standards under ISO Technical Committee 8 related to shipbuilding and marine structures.
- Classification Society Rules – National and international regulations from bodies such as Lloyd’s Register, DNV GL, and Bureau Veritas, which often reference ISO standards for anchor specifications.
- ISO 19901 – Standards relating to offshore structures, which may include anchoring guidelines applicable to certain vessel types.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of
national Standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International
Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees. Esch member
body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, govern-
mental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to
the member bodies for approval before their acceptance as International Standards by
the ISO Council. They are approved in accordance with ISO procedures requiring at
least 75 % approval by the member bodies voting.
International Standard ISO 9437 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 8,
Shipbuilding and marine structures.
This first edition cancels and replaces ISO 4050/2-1980, of which it constitutes a minor
revision.
Users should note that all International Standards undergo revision from time to time
and that any reference made herein to any other International Standard implies its
latest edition, unless otherwise stated.
