General Information

Abstract

ISO 24409-2:2014 prescribes standardized signs and safety notices specifically for use on board ships. Each sign is categorized and indexed according to the safety message that is to be conveyed. Each sign is provided with relevant information on the preferred format of use, the context in which it is used and displayed as well as a description of the intended audience. The shape and colour required to be used for each sign, as prescribed by ISO 3864-4, are given together with the graphical symbols contained within each sign. ISO 24409-2:2014 specifies the sign originals that may be scaled for reproduction and application purposes. It includes signs which require supplementary text signs to be used in conjunction with them to improve comprehension. This catalogue is intended to be under continual revision as new shipboard signs and notices are added and as new requirements are identified and corresponding safety signs and notices are developed and standardised. Where an ISO 7010 reference number is given in ISO 24409-2:2014 it means that the sign is identical to the one in ISO 7010.

Overview

ISO/FDIS 24409-2:2026 is a key international standard from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) focusing on the design, location, and application of safety signs, fire control plan signs, safety notices, and markings on ships. This part of the standard acts as a comprehensive catalogue of standardized shipboard safety signs and fire control plan signs, ensuring consistent communication of safety information across international vessels. It details the categorization and preferred usage contexts for each sign, guiding maritime professionals and organizations in selecting and implementing proper safety signage for enhanced shipboard safety and compliance.

Key Topics

  • Standardization and Categorization: Each safety sign is categorized based on the safety message conveyed, such as emergency escape, firefighting equipment, lifesaving systems, prohibition, warning, or mandatory actions.
  • Design Requirements: The standard prescribes the use of specific shapes, colours, and graphical symbols as outlined in referenced standards like ISO 3864-4, ensuring global consistency and recognizability.
  • Intended Audience and Application Context: Every sign is detailed with information on preferred format and context of use, along with a description of the intended audience-be it general ship occupants or trained personnel.
  • Supplementary Text: Certain signs may require supplementary text to enhance comprehension for diverse audiences on board.
  • Reproducibility and Flexibility: The document includes the original artwork for each sign, which can be scaled and reproduced as needed for practical shipboard application.
  • Alignment with International Regulations: Where applicable, references to ISO 7010 indicate identical signage, supporting harmonization with broader occupational safety signage conventions.
  • Continuous Improvement: The catalogue is designed for ongoing revision, allowing for the inclusion of new signs as maritime safety requirements evolve.

Applications

ISO/FDIS 24409-2 is highly relevant to a broad range of maritime and marine industry stakeholders, including:

  • Ship Operators and Owners: Ensures that safety information is communicated clearly and consistently, reducing confusion and increasing shipboard safety during both routine operations and emergencies.
  • Shipbuilders and Outfitting Contractors: Provides clear guidelines for the installation and reproduction of safety signs, supporting compliance from the design phase through service life.
  • Port Authorities and Inspectors: Enables verification of compliance with internationally recognized safety sign standards during ship inspections and audits.
  • Maritime Safety Managers and Trainers: Assists in training crew members and passengers to recognize and appropriately respond to standardized safety messages.
  • Lifesaving and Fire Protection Equipment Suppliers: Guides the proper marking and identification of emergency equipment to facilitate effective response.

By using these standardized signs and markings, ships can achieve improved safety communication, minimize language barriers, and ensure compliance with both international and flag-state requirements.

Related Standards

To ensure comprehensive compliance and optimal use of shipboard safety signs, the following related ISO standards should be referenced:

  • ISO 24409-1: Ships and marine technology - Design, location and use of shipboard safety signs, fire control plan signs, safety notices and safety markings - Part 1: Design principles
  • ISO 24409-3: Ships and marine technology - Design, location and use of shipboard safety signs, fire control plan signs, safety notices and safety markings - Part 3: Code of practice
  • ISO 3864 (Parts 1-4): Graphical symbols - Safety colours and safety signs
  • ISO 7010: Graphical symbols - Safety colours and safety signs - Registered safety signs
  • ISO 17631: Ships and marine technology - Shipboard plans for fire protection, life-saving appliances, and means of escape

These standards, used jointly, help organizations implement a robust safety culture onboard ships by promoting clear visual communication and adherence to best practices in maritime safety signage.

Introduction
The growth of international travel by ship has created a need to provide people travelling and working
on-board ships with signs and associated systems that communicate consistent and effective safety
information. This part of ISO 24409 specifies a system of safety and fire control plan signs on ships and
other marine installations that is generally consistent with standardized signs with which many will have
gained familiarity in other applications.
As such, this part of ISO 24409 clarifies and supplements existing requirements set out in SOLAS regulations
II-2/7.1.1, II-2/13.3.2.5.1, II-2/13.7.1.1, III/9.2.3, III/11.5, III/20.10, and ISO 17631. This standard does not
deal with graphical symbols to be used on shipboard plans or documentation.
This part of ISO 24409 contains a catalogue of safety signs developed in accordance with the general design
principles specified in Part 1, for application on ships in accordance with the code of practice in Part 3.

plan signs in this part of ISO 24409, please consult ISO 17631. These are the source documents from
which to create safety and fire control plans signs.
No changes shall be made in the ISO source documents to affecting ISO 24409 without first consulting
the responsible ISO subcommittee (ISO TC8/SC1) for ISO 24409.
1 Scope
This part of ISO 24409 catalogues standardized safety signs and fire control plan signs for use on board
ships. Each sign in this part of ISO 24409 is categorized and indexed according to the message it conveys. This
part of ISO 24409 also includes signs which require supplementary text signs to improve comprehension.
Though the signs in this catalogue will largely remain static, new signs will be added as requirements are
identified and corresponding safety signs and fire control plan signs are developed and standardized.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO document should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
ISO draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve the use of (a)
patent(s). ISO takes no position concerning the evidence, validity or applicability of any claimed patent
rights in respect thereof. As of the date of publication of this document, ISO had not received notice of (a)
patent(s) which may be required to implement this document. However, implementers are cautioned that
this may not represent the latest information, which may be obtained from the patent database available at
www.iso.org/patents. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.

For an explanation of the voluntary nature of standards, the meaning of ISO specific terms and expressions
related to conformity assessment, as well as information about ISO's adherence to the World Trade
Organization (WTO) principles in the Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT), see www.iso.org/iso/foreword.html.
This document was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 8, Ships and marine technology, Subcommittee
SC 1, Life-saving and fire protection.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 24409-2:2014) which has been technically
revised.
The main changes are as follows:
— the structure of the document is revised;
— all newly published registered safety signs for relevant maritime use are included;
— relevant additional information for maritime use is included and all other details included in the first
edition are removed; and
— updates from the revised edition of ISO 17631 are included
A list of all parts in the ISO 22409 series can be found on the ISO website.
Any feedback or questions on this document should be directed to the user’s national standards body. A
complete listing of these bodies can be found at www.iso.org/members.html.

Introduction
The growth of international travel by ship has created a need to provide people travelling and working
on board ships with signs and associated systems that communicate consistent and effective safety
information. This document specifies a system of safety and fire control plan signs on ships and other
marine installations that is generally consistent with standardized safety signs, with which many users are
familiar in other applications.
As such, this document clarifies and supplements existing requirements set out in SOLAS regulations II-
[1]
2/7.1.1, II-2/13.3.2.5.1, II-2/13.7.1.1, III/9.2.3, III/11.5, III/20.10, and ISO 17631. This document does not
contain graphical symbols to be used on shipboard plans or documentation.
This document contains a catalogue of safety signs developed in accordance with the general design
principles specified in ISO 24409-1 for application on ships in accordance with the code of practice in
ISO 24409-3.
Although the signs in this document are expected to remain static, it is possible that new signs will be added
as requirements are identified and corresponding safety signs and fire control plan signs are developed and
standardized
WARNING — The colours represented for safety signs in this document can be neither viewed on
screen nor printed as true representations. For the purpose of colour matching, see ISO 3864-4
which provides colorimetric and photometric properties together with, as a guideline, references
from colour ordering systems.

The growth of international travel by ship has created a need to provide people travelling and working on
board ships with signs and associated systems that communicate consistent and effective safety information.
This document specifies a system of safety and fire control plan signs on ships and other marine installations
that is generally consistent with standardized safety signs, with which many users are familiar with in other
applications.
As such, this document clarifies and supplements existing requirements set out in SOLAS regulations II- Formatted: Default Paragraph Font
