Overview

ISO 10374:1991/Amd 1:1995 is an important amendment to the international standard governing automatic identification of freight containers. This amendment changes the status of Annex B from informative to normative, thereby making its technical specifications mandatory. Developed by ISO Technical Committee 104, Subcommittee SC 4, this standard focuses on enhancing automatic identification methods for freight containers, which is critical for improving global logistics, supply chain management, and container tracking systems.

Key Topics

  • Freight Containers Identification: The standard specifies the methods and systems used for automatic identification of shipping containers.
  • Annex B Status Change: The shift of Annex B to normative status means the technical specifications related to the AEI (Automatic Equipment Identification) reflected energy system are now compulsory.
  • AEI Reflected Energy System: Annex B provides detailed technical requirements and specifications for this system used in container identification.
  • Data Processing and Transmission: Emphasizes the use of data codes, tags, and data blocks to facilitate automated container tracking and information exchange.
  • Standardization Governance: Developed under ISO/TC 104/SC 4 with consensus of at least 75% member approval, reflecting international agreement on freight container identification practices.

Applications

  • Shipping and Logistics: Enables fast, reliable container identification at ports and terminals, facilitating efficient cargo handling and tracking.
  • Supply Chain Management: Supports real-time container data communication for improved inventory control, shipment status updates, and warehouse operations.
  • Customs and Security: Enhances container verification processes by integrating automatic identification technology to ensure compliance and security.
  • Intermodal Transport: Promotes seamless exchange of container information across transport modes such as sea, rail, and road.
  • Data Systems Integration: Used by IT systems in freight forwarding and terminal operations for automated data capture and processing.

By adopting ISO 10374:1991/Amd 1:1995, organizations benefit from standardized AEI reflected energy systems that improve container visibility, reduce manual errors, and speed up container handling processes worldwide.

Related Standards

  • ISO 6346 – Coding, identification, and marking of freight containers, providing container number formats and markings.
  • ISO 1161 – Specification for corner fittings used in freight containers.
  • ISO 1496 – Series detailing container specifications for various container types.
  • ISO/IEC 7816 – Standards for smart cards relevant for data storage and identification technologies.
  • ISO 9001 – Quality management systems applicable to companies implementing container tracking and identification processes.

In conclusion, ISO 10374:1991/Amd 1:1995 plays a crucial role in the standardized identification of freight containers using automatic identification technology. It facilitates interoperability and efficiency in container logistics worldwide, making it essential for stakeholders in shipping, logistics, and supply chain management to adopt and comply with its provisions.

Foreword
IS0 (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national standards bodies (IS0 member bodies). The work of
preparing International Standards is normally carried out through IS0
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for
which a technical committee has been established has the right to be
represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. IS0
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.
