Abstract

This document specifies a uniform, reproducible testing process for various drive units, chassis, constructions and attached parts as well as sweeping systems of the sweepers described in ISO 24147, with which a comparison of the energy consumption levels can be performed. This defines a representative test circuit and/or test bench cycle with which the energy consumption levels of the sweepers to be inspected can be evaluated and compared within the scope of reproducible test trips and/or test bench runs.

ISO 25333 is an ISO standard for road sweepers. It specifies a uniform, reproducible test procedure for measuring and comparing energy consumption across different drive units, chassis, constructions, attached parts and sweeping systems. It is written for manufacturers, test laboratories, and buyers or users who need comparable environmental-efficiency data.

What does ISO 25333 specify?

ISO 25333 specifies how to test sweepers so their energy consumption can be compared under repeatable conditions. The document covers both a test circuit and a test bench cycle, so results can be generated either on the vehicle or in a simulated bench run.

The structure is straightforward:

  • Clause 1 states the scope.
  • Clause 2 names the normative reference.
  • Clause 3 defines the key terms used in the test method.
  • Clause 4 gives the requirements for the test unit, the environment, the test circuit and the test bench.
  • Clause 5 explains how to carry out measurements on the test track and on the test bench.
  • Annex A provides a sample data collection sheet.
AnnexWhat it covers
Annex ASample data collection sheet for measuring energy consumption of truck mounted, self-propelled or towed sweepers

What are the key requirements of ISO 25333?

ISO 25333 focuses on getting comparable results by fixing the vehicle condition, the test surroundings and the measurement method. In practice, this means the sweeper must be prepared in a defined state, tested under controlled conditions, and reported in a consistent format.

Test unit preparation and documentation

Clause 4.1 requires the sweeper to be tested in its prescribed operating condition and at steady state. The measurement systems must be installed according to the attachment manufacturer’s specifications, and the vehicle configuration must be documented, with Annex A giving a sample report sheet.

This matters because configuration changes can strongly affect energy use. The standard also says that if an alternative drive system is installed, only the energy used from the installed energy storage device is counted, using a tank-to-wheel approach.

Environmental and circuit conditions

Clause 4.2 sets the environmental conditions for the test: controlled temperature ranges, standard air pressure, low wind and a dry road surface. Clause 4.3 requires a paved, level test circuit with only limited slope and large-radius curves.

This matters because energy consumption changes with weather and road geometry. The test circuit is meant to resemble a typical paved city road while still being repeatable.

Test bench suitability

Clause 4.4 says the performance test bench must be suitable for sweepers in accordance with ISO 24147 and, where relevant, able to represent energy recovery.

That matters for machines whose sweeping mode can be measured without a road test. It also makes the bench method usable for drive systems that recover energy during operation.

On-track measurement methods

Clause 5.1 gives two track-based methods. Test method A uses a defined sweeping-capacity target, a prescribed measurement run, and repeated runs with the same configuration. It also requires separate reporting when transport and sweeping use different energy sources, and it excludes auxiliary consumers and diesel particulate filter regeneration.

This matters because the test is meant to reflect the work of sweeping, not unrelated loads. Fuel flow must be measured with suitable equipment, and the method requires trained personnel.

Test method B is a shorter track method that measures fuel consumption volume during cleaning at maximum cleaning speed. It also requires the mass of the sweeper to match the operating mass before cleaning starts.

On-bench measurement method

Clause 5.2 describes a bench method intended to reproduce the same sweeping-mode result as the track run. The sweeper is conditioned to steady state, the operating parameters are matched to the track test, and repeated measurements are recorded at a fixed sampling interval.

This matters for users who want a controlled laboratory method. The bench method also requires multiple runs and consistency checks, so the recorded values are suitable for comparison.

Energy reporting

Clause 5.1 and Table 1 require energy to be expressed in kWh using the specified conversion values for fuel and gas types.

This is important because different sweepers may use different energy carriers. A common energy unit lets results be compared across combustion, gaseous and electric-related systems.

What terms does ISO 25333 define?

  • Measuring turbine - A device that records fuel consumption by differential measurement in the fuel system.
  • Measurement run / test trip - A sweeper run on the test circuit that includes sweeping mode and transporting mode.
  • Test bench run - A simulation of a measurement run carried out on a test bench.
  • Operating mass (OM) - The mass of the sweeper ready to drive and ready for operating and sweeping mode, with equipment, empty hopper and debris water storage, plus operator mass where applicable.
  • Steady state - A condition where the operating fluids remain at a stable temperature level during the run.
  • Sweeping mode - The operating mode in which the sweeper performs cleaning or sweeping work.
  • Transporting mode - The driving mode used when the sweeper is moved between work sites.
  • Fuel consumption volume - The distance the sweeper can clean with one litre of fuel, or the fuel consumption per hour.

Who uses ISO 25333?

ISO 25333 is used by sweeper manufacturers, chassis suppliers and attachment manufacturers who need a defined way to measure energy consumption. It is also used by test laboratories, procurement teams and users who compare different road sweeper models or prepare environmental-efficiency claims.

In practice, it supports test setup, configuration control, data recording and reporting. It is particularly useful where buyers need to compare machines with different drive systems or operating concepts.

Which standards are used with ISO 25333?

ISO 25333 has one normative reference: ISO 24147:2023, Road operation machinery and associated equipment - Sweepers - Commercial specifications. ISO 25333 uses ISO 24147 to identify the sweeper types in scope and to assess test bench suitability for the machine categories covered there.

What does the ISO 25333 document contain?

ISO 25333 contains a defined test framework for energy-consumption comparison, not a product specification. Its technical content includes the test-unit requirements, the environmental conditions, the test circuit rules, the test bench requirements and two on-track measurement methods.

The document also includes Figure 1 for the measurement-run sequence, Figure 2 for fuel-flowmeter connection, and Table 1 for converting fuel or gas quantities into energy values. Annex A provides a sample data collection sheet covering vehicle data, measurement conditions and repeated measurement runs.

procurement guidelines from different regions, there is a demand for universal processes and provisions for
determining the environmental effects of sweepers, with the objective of achieving a uniform evaluation of
the environmental efficiency.
The environmental effects in the utilization phase for sweepers are essentially determined by their energy

In order to define appropriate characteristic numbers for the environmental effect of sweepers, it is
necessary to differentiate between sweeping mode and general trips, for instance, to and from the work site.
The objective is to be able to issue an environmental efficiency ID for various vehicle models.
