Overview
ISO 8489-3:1995 specifies the dimensions, tolerances and designation for cones used in cross winding with a half angle of 4° 20'. It is part of the ISO 8489 series for cones for cross winding in textile machinery. The standard describes cone types, dimensional checks using gauges, and the information manufacturers must supply for reliable use and interchangeability.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and cone types
- Applies specifically to cones for cross winding with a half angle of 4° 20' (also referenced as ISO 8489-3).
- Defines two types: Type A (open-ended) and Type B (cone with rolled-in top).
- Main dimensions and tolerances
- Nominal inner diameters and lengths are tabulated (examples include sizes such as 55 x 145 mm, 59 x 170 mm, 80 x 230 mm - see table 1 in the standard).
- Deviations from the half-angle are controlled by dimensional tolerances for the cone diameters and length.
- Characteristics manufacturers must state
- Material (paper or plastic)
- Surface treatment (e.g., untreated, impregnated, lacquered for paper cones)
- Yarn type to be wound, wall thickness, run-out tolerance, tailing grooves/notches, and perforation details
- Minimum distance between cone ends and hole edges (specified as 16 mm + 0.5 mm)
- Gauges and measurement
- Conical gauges/plug gauges are defined to check inner diameters; gauge tolerances for diameters use the ISO 286-1 fit system (js6 tolerance).
- Cone length must be checked with a slide-gauge or suitable length gauge (conical gauges are not used for length checks).
- Designation format
- Standardized ordering format: “Cone ISO 8489-3 - [Type] [large inner diameter] x [length]”
- Example: Cone ISO 8489-3 - A 59 x 170
Applications and users
- Who uses ISO 8489-3:
- Cone manufacturers specifying production tolerances and material/finish
- Textile machinery OEMs and winding-equipment designers ensuring cone compatibility
- Quality control and inspection teams verifying cone dimensions and run-out
- Procurement and spec writers placing orders for cones used in cross winding and automatic winding systems
- Practical benefits:
- Ensures interchangeability between cones and winding machines
- Supports consistent winding performance, improved downstream processing, and automation compatibility
Related standards
- ISO 8489-1 (recommended main dimensions)
- ISO 286-1 (ISO system of limits and fits), referenced for gauge tolerances

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national Standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work
of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Esch member body interested in a subject for
which a technical committee has been established has the right to be
represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.
International Standard ISO 8489-3 was prepared by Technical Committee
lSO/TC 72, Textile machinery and allied machinery and accessories, Sub-
committee SC 2, VVinding and preparatory machinery for fabric manufac-
tue.
This first edition of ISO 8489-3 cancels and replaces ISO 111 :1978, which
has been technically revised.
ISO 8489 consists of the following Parts, under the general title Textile
machinery and accessories - Cones for Cross winding:
- Part 7: ßecommended main dimensions
- Part 2: Dimensions, tolerantes and designation of cones with half
angle 3 degrees 30’
- Part 3: Dimensions, tolerantes and designation of cones with half
angle 4 degrees 20’
- Part 4: Dimensions, tolerantes and designation of cones
with half
angle 4 degrees 20’ for winding for dyeing purposes
- Part 5: Dimensions, tolerantes and designation of cones with half

Avant-propos
L’ISO (Organisation internationale de normalisation) est une fédération
mondiale d’organismes nationaux de normalisation (comités membres de
I’ISO). L’élaboration des Normes internationales est en général confiée aux
comités techniques de I’ISO.
