Overview

IEC 60730-2-4:1990/AMD2:2001 is an important amendment to the international standard IEC 60730-2-4, which governs automatic electrical controls intended for household and similar use. This particular amendment, Amendment 2 (2001), focuses on the particular requirements for thermal motor protectors used in motor-compressors of hermetic and semi-hermetic types. Published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), this standard ensures the safety, reliability, and electromagnetic compatibility of these protective devices integral to household compressor motors.

Thermal motor protectors play a crucial role in safeguarding motors from overheating due to overloads or faults. The amendment introduces updates that refine the technical requirements related to mechanical endurance, electrical clearances, EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility), and test methods, thereby enhancing the robustness and consistency of thermal motor protector performance.

Key Topics

  • Thermal Motor Protector Requirements
Detailed conditions for thermal motor protectors in hermetic and semi-hermetic motor-compressors, including mechanical, thermal, and electrical specifications.

  • Electrical Ratings and Voltages
Updated references such as replacing operating voltages from 660 V to 690 V, aligning with newer electrical safety norms.

  • Creepage and Clearance Distances
Revised rules for creepage distances, air gaps, and solid insulation clearances to prevent electrical arcing and ensure protection against electrical faults.

  • Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC)
Specific provisions for EMC with two main aspects:

    • Emission - controlling electromagnetic interference emitted by the device.
    • Immunity - ensuring device functionality in the presence of electromagnetic disturbances.
  • Endurance Testing Procedures
Introduction of an informative Annex AA specifying accelerated endurance tests for thermal motor protectors as components (not installed in motors), including:

    • Electrical, thermal, mechanical, and manual testing conditions.
    • Automated cycling rates and load conditions.
    • Evaluation criteria for test success to predict protector stability and reliability.
  • Normative Reference Updates
Replacement of outdated standard references to more recent versions, ensuring compliance with contemporary international safety standards.

Applications

IEC 60730-2-4 Amendment 2 is critical for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and safety organizations involved in the design, production, and certification of:

  • Hermetic and Semi-Hermetic Motor-Compressor Units
Widely used in household refrigerators, air conditioning units, and heat pumps where motor-compressors are sealed for efficient operation.

  • Thermal Motor Protectors
Components specifically designed to prevent motor damage by interrupting power during thermal overload events in motor-compressors.

  • Household Appliance Safety
Ensures electrical safety and performance consistency within domestic appliances employing motor-compressors, promoting user safety and appliance longevity.

  • Product Testing and Certification
Provides a standard testing protocol for endurance, EMC, and insulation safety compliance, guiding certifiers in evaluating thermal motor protectors.

Related Standards

  • IEC 60730-1
General requirements for automatic electrical controls for household and similar use, to be read in conjunction with IEC 60730-2-4.

  • IEC 60335-2-34
Safety of household and similar electrical appliances, specifically relating to motors and their protections, including locked rotor tests referenced in this amendment.

  • IEC 60269 Series
Standards for low-voltage fuses, replacing earlier IEC 269 references within the amendment for updated fuse requirements.

  • EMC Standards
Harmonizing with broader international EMC standards to address emissions and immunity in line with global regulatory frameworks.

Ajouter, après l’annexe H, la nouvelle annexe AA suivante:

Annexe AA
(informative)
Essai d'endurance pour les protecteurs thermiques de moteurs en tant

que composants, c'est-à-dire non installés dans un moteur

AA.1 But
