Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - Part 2-34: Particular requirements for motor-compressors

This European Standard deals with the safety of sealed (hermetic and semi-hermetic type) motor-compressors, their protection and control systems, if any, which are intended for use in equipment for household and similar purposes and which conform with the standards applicable to such equipment. It applies to motor-compressors tested separately, under the most severe conditions that may be expected to occur in normal use, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V for single-phase motor-compressors and 480 V for other motor-compressors

Overview

EN IEC 60335-2-34:2023/A12:2025 is a crucial European standard published by CLC (CENELEC) that specifies the safety requirements for sealed (hermetic and semi-hermetic) motor-compressors used in household and similar electrical appliances. This amendment (A12:2025) supplements and modifies existing clauses in EN IEC 60335-2-34:2023 to align with the latest safety regulations and directives, particularly addressing the design, construction, marking, instructions, and other particular requirements for motor-compressors. The standard is intended to ensure that motor-compressors function safely under the most severe conditions expected in regular use and details their rated voltages: up to 250 V for single-phase and up to 480 V for other types.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Applicability

    • Applies to sealed motor-compressors and their protection/control systems, used in equipment for household and similar uses.
    • Covers motor-compressors tested separately, addressing the most demanding normal-use conditions.
  • Modifications and Additions

    • Updates to essential safety requirements, particularly focused on:
      • Classification
      • Marking and instructions
      • Construction and mechanical strength
      • Specific documentation and installation guideline requirements
  • Regulatory Alignment

    • Harmonized with EU directives, including the Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU) and the Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC).
    • Compliance ensures presumption of conformity with European safety objectives and essential requirements.
  • Technical Documentation

    • Requirements for detailed installation, servicing, dismantling, and disposal instructions.
    • Technical datasheets must specify refrigerant compatibility, classification details, electronics presence, internal volume, pressure ratings, and electrical current parameters.
  • Refrigerant Safety

    • Lists refrigerants classified as Fluid Group 1 under the Pressure Equipment Directive, ensuring consistent and safe material identification and use.
  • Commercial Use

    • Additional requirements and guidance for motor-compressors intended for commercial appliances, including handling, mechanical robustness, mounting, and transport provisions.

Applications
