Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - Part 2-34: Particular requirements for motor-compressors

This European Standard deals with the safety of sealed (hermetic and semi-hermetic type) motor-compressors, their protection and control systems, if any, which are intended for use in equipment for household and similar purposes and which conform with the standards applicable to such equipment. It applies to motor-compressors tested separately, under the most severe conditions that may be expected to occur in normal use, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V for single-phase motor-compressors and 480 V for other motor-compressors

Overview

SIST EN IEC 60335-2-34:2023/A12:2025 is a European Standard developed by CLC/TC 61, focusing on the safety requirements for motor-compressors used in household and similar electrical appliances. This amendment (A12) to the existing EN IEC 60335-2-34:2023 standard specifically addresses sealed motor-compressors of the hermetic and semi-hermetic types, including their protection and control systems when applicable. It applies to motor-compressors operating at rated voltages up to 250 V for single-phase and 480 V for other motor-compressors.

The standard ensures motor-compressors are tested under the most severe conditions expected in typical use while harmonizing with safety directives such as the Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU and Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application
Motor-compressors covered by this standard are intended for household and similar purposes, tested separately, including protection and control systems. It excludes noise emission standards as noise is not deemed a relevant hazard within the scope.

  • Classification
Motor-compressors are classified based on testing with or without Annex AA. Annex AA classification requires the motor-compressor to deliver maximum cooling capacity irrespective of input sensors in the final appliance configuration.

  • Marking and Documentation
Manufacturers must provide clear documentation covering:

    • Installation, servicing, dismantling, and disposal instructions
    • Refrigerants compatible with the compressor
    • Classification relative to Annex AA
    • Details on electronic circuits, housing volume, allowable pressure, and locked rotor amperage (LRA)
  • Testing and Compliance

    • Endurance testing (Clause 18) is not applicable under this amendment.
    • Mechanical strength tests ensure durability under expected handling, transport, and assembly conditions.
    • Construction modifications include safeguards against incorrect mounting and provisions for lifting attachments on heavy compressors.
  • Additional Requirements for Commercial Use
Annex ZE specifies enhanced safety requirements for motor-compressors in commercial appliances, including design features to prevent unsafe mounting and easier handling specifications.

  • Harmonization with EU Directives
Annexes ZZA and ZZB detail the correspondence between the standard clauses and relevant EU safety objectives, enabling presumption of conformity with directives like 2014/35/EU and 2006/42/EC when followed.

Applications

This standard is pivotal for manufacturers, designers, and conformity assessors of household and similar electrical appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, and heat pumps that incorporate sealed motor-compressors. It ensures:

  • Consumer safety by addressing electrical and mechanical risks related to motor-compressors.
  • Regulatory compliance by aligning with European electrical safety and machinery directives.
  • Product reliability through rigorous testing requirements under extreme operating conditions.
  • Sustainable lifecycle management with clear guidelines on installation, servicing, and disposal.
  • Compatibility and environmental safety by specifying permissible refrigerants and safety markings.

Industry professionals rely on this standard to develop safe, dependable refrigeration and HVAC systems that meet current market and legal demands.
