Overview

The prEN IEC 63508:2024 standard, developed by CLC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization), establishes a comprehensive Common Data Dictionary (CDD) database for circuit-breakers and similar equipment for household use. It is a pivotal reference that supports the digital description of protection devices such as miniature circuit-breakers (MCBs) used in domestic and similar installations.

This standard is part of the ongoing IEC effort to create unambiguous semantic descriptions of electrical protection devices within the IEC Common Data Dictionary (IEC CDD). The goal is to harmonize product data representation to streamline e-commerce, product selection, engineering design, and information exchange in the electrical protection market globally.

Key Topics

  • Digital Standardization of Circuit-Breakers: prEN IEC 63508 defines a structured database format for describing miniature circuit-breakers and other household electrical protection devices. This digital standardization enables accurate, consistent, and international product data sharing.

  • Device Classification and Properties: The standard categorizes circuit-breakers based on rated currents (not exceeding 125 A) and voltages (not exceeding 440 V) and supplies detailed product classes, such as AC miniature circuit-breakers for ordinary persons, skilled persons, or both.

  • Blocks of Properties: To describe devices, the standard organizes data elements into "blocks" including:

    • Identification
    • General Technical Data
    • Main Circuit Details
    • Short-Circuit Performance
    • Release/Tripping Characteristics
    • Control and Auxiliary Devices
    • Installation & Mounting Information
    • Connection Facilities
    • Environmental Conditions
    • Product Certification and Standards Compliance
  • IEC Common Data Dictionary (IEC CDD): The database leverages the IEC 61360 series standards for the classification and definition of electrical items’ data, ensuring semantic clarity, consistent terminology, and technical data interoperability.

  • Normative References: This standard builds on key IEC and CLC standards, such as IEC 60898-1 (Miniature circuit-breakers), IEC 60947-2, IEC 61360-1, IEC 62683-1, and others related to electrical protection and data exchange.

Applications

The prEN IEC 63508:2024 standard provides practical benefits and applications across multiple spheres in the electrical industry:

  • E-Commerce and E-Catalogues: Enables creation of digital catalogs with accurate product differentiation by performance, certifications, and environmental data, promoting efficient online trade.

  • B2B Data Exchange: Reduces complexity and cost in data mapping between manufacturers, distributors, and customers by offering a common unambiguous product data format.

  • Product Selection Tools: Facilitates decision-making for engineers, architects, and installers by providing reliable and complete product data for household circuit-breakers.

  • Supply Chain and Inventory Management: Minimizes duplication of articles and data misinterpretation, improving inventory accuracy for manufacturers and retailers.

  • Environmental Reporting: Integrates environmental declarations and product sustainability data, supporting regulatory compliance and green procurement.
