Overview
EN 50525-2-11:2011 is a CENELEC (CLC) standard that specifies requirements for flexible thermoplastic PVC insulated and PVC sheathed low-voltage energy cables used to connect domestic appliances to the fixed supply. Although the EN 50525 series covers cables up to 450/750 V, this Part specifically applies to cables of rated voltages U0/U up to and including 300/500 V. It covers circular and flat flexible cables, defines conductor and material classes, maximum operating temperatures (70 °C for VV types and 90 °C for V2V2 types), and sets out mandatory tests and marking.
Key Topics
- Cable types and CENELEC codes
- Light duty: H03VV-F, H03VVH2-F
- Ordinary duty: H05VV-F, H05VVH2-F
- Heat-resistant (90 °C): H03V2V2-F, H05V2V2-F, and strain-bearing H05V2V2D3-F
- Conductor and materials
- Conductors shall be class 5 (flexible fine-stranded) per EN 60228.
- Insulation compounds: TI2 (standard) and TI3 (heat resistant) according to EN 50363-3.
- Sheath compounds: TM2/TM3 per EN 50363-4-1.
- Sizes and constructions
- Sizes covered include 0.5 mm², 0.75 mm² up to 4 mm² depending on type; flat and circular constructions and core counts are defined for each code.
- Testing and quality requirements
- Annex A lists mandatory tests: conductor resistance, voltage tests (e.g., 1 500 V / 2 000 V depending on insulation thickness), insulation resistance at operating temperatures, long-term insulation resistance, mechanical and ageing tests, and flammability tests (referenced standards).
- Annexes B and C define dimensional data and compatibility test requirements.
Applications
- Intended primarily for power leads and flexible cords used with domestic appliances, small household equipment, extension leads, and portable tools where flexible, PVC-insulated low-voltage cables are required.
- Primary users:
- Cable manufacturers developing compliant flexible PVC cables
- Product designers and appliance OEMs specifying power cords
- Test laboratories performing electrical and mechanical compliance testing
- Procurement and conformity assessors ensuring components meet EN requirements
- Installers and specifiers selecting flexible cables for consumer and light commercial applications
Related Standards
