Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - Part 2-48: Particular requirements for commercial electric grillers and toasters
This European Standard deals with the safety of electrically operated commercial grillers and toasters not intended for household use. The rated voltage being not more than 250 V for single-phase appliances connected between one phase and neutral, and 480 V for other appliances. Rotary or continuous grillers and toasters and similar appliances intended for grilling by radiant heat such as rotisseries, salamanders, etc. are within the scope of this standard. Appliances within the scope of this standard are typically used in restaurants, canteens, hospitals and commercial enterprises such as bakeries, butcheries, etc.

Overview
EN 60335-2-48:2003/A12:2024 (CLC) is a European amendment specifying safety requirements for commercial electric grillers and toasters - appliances not intended for household use. It covers fixed and rotary/continuous grillers and radiant-heat units (rotisseries, salamanders, etc.) for use in restaurants, canteens, hospitals, bakeries, butcheries and other commercial enterprises. Rated voltage limits are ≤ 250 V for single-phase phase-to-neutral and ≤ 480 V for other appliances.
This amendment (A12) updates EN 60335-2-48:2003 and supplements Part 1 (EN 60335-1) with modifications on scope, marking/instructions, protection against live parts, construction, stability, hygiene and annexes.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & user considerations: Focuses on reasonably foreseeable hazards for typical operators; explicitly excludes normal household use and unsupervised use by children. Noise emission is considered non-hazardous up to ≤ 70 dB(A).
- Marking & instructions: Manuals must state intended use, operator maintenance, safe adjustment/maintenance procedures, training guidance, stability conditions, accident procedures, PPE recommendations for handling hot food, and slip hazard warnings. Repairs must be performed by competent persons. Includes mandatory warning: disconnect before cleaning or maintenance.
- Protection against live parts: Applicability of test probe 18 (EN 61032) is limited to appliances intended for installation in public areas.
- Construction & ergonomics:
- Lids must have at least one handle.
- Working height between 695–980 mm; controls must be visible, reachable and guarded against accidental actuation.
- Fluid category: Fluid Category 2 if no cleaning system; Category 3 if equipped with a cleaning system (per EN 61770).
- Mechanical endurance: Specific Part 1 endurance clause is declared not applicable in this amendment; guard/interlock test requires 5 000 cycles at 5 cycles/min for certain guards.
- Hygiene (Annex ZAA): Defines food/splash/non-food areas, material corrosion exceptions when manual provides protection instructions, and temperature-based exemptions (e.g., surfaces ≥ 82 °C or >100 °C impact cleaning/fastener requirements). Ventilation openings must be in non-food areas unless necessary for food processing.
Applications - Who uses this standard
- Manufacturers and designers of commercial grillers and toasters
- Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies performing CE/cross-border compliance
- Procurement and safety managers in commercial kitchens (restaurants, canteens, hospitals)
- Technical writers preparing manuals, installation and maintenance instructions
- Regulatory and certification authorities in Europe
