Overview
EN 60335-2-52:2003/A1:2008 is the CENELEC-adopted amendment (A1, 2008) to the European product standard for the safety of household and similar electrical appliances - specifically Part 2-52: Particular requirements for oral hygiene appliances. It aligns with IEC 60335-2-52:2002/A1:2008 and updates EN 60335-2-52:2003 to clarify scope, safety coverage and normative references. The amendment was approved on 2008-05-01 with national implementation guidance (dop 2009-02-01; dow 2013-05-01).
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope clarification: Emphasises protection for vulnerable users - persons (including children) whose physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience/knowledge, prevent safe use without supervision; and children playing with the appliance.
- Coverage of abnormal situations: The amendment explicitly includes reasonably expected abnormal conditions in testing and design assessment.
- Electromagnetic effects: Takes into account how electromagnetic phenomena can affect safe operation of oral hygiene appliances.
- Hierarchy of standards: Where Part 2 does not add specific rules for a hazard, EN 60335-1 (Part 1) applies. The standard is a product family standard and takes precedence over horizontal/generic standards covering the same subject.
- Thermal considerations: Bibliography and normative references updated to include ISO 13732-1 (assessment methods for human responses to contact with hot surfaces) - indicating attention to surface temperature hazards.
- Implementation guidance: Committee recommends national adoption between 12 and 36 months after publication to allow industry transition.
Practical Applications
Who uses EN 60335-2-52:2003/A1:2008 and why:
- Manufacturers of oral hygiene appliances - to design and validate safe electric toothbrushes, oral irrigators and similar devices for household use.
- Test laboratories and conformity assessors - to perform type and safety testing that reflects Part 2 particular requirements and the overarching Part 1 clauses.
- Regulatory and certification bodies - to evaluate compliance with European safety requirements for market access and CE marking.
- Product safety engineers and risk assessors - to ensure designs address abnormal use, electromagnetic interference and vulnerable-user scenarios.
Related Standards
- EN 60335-1 (General safety requirements for household electrical appliances) - applies when Part 2 is silent on a hazard.
- IEC 60335-2-52 / IEC 60335 series - international counterparts.
- ISO 13732-1 - ergonomics of thermal contact (referenced for hot-surface assessment).
This amendment refines safety expectations for electrical oral hygiene products and should be referenced by stakeholders involved in design, testing and regulatory compliance for these appliances.
