Overview

EN 60335-2-15:2016/A11:2018 is a CENELEC amendment to the European household-appliance safety standard EN 60335-2-15:2016. Published September 2018 and approved by CENELEC on 2018-04-18, this amendment (A11) adds specific requirements for pot coffee-makers - traditional appliances that boil very fine ground coffee in an open container. The amendment clarifies scope, definitions, marking, instructions, construction and a defined test to verify that pot coffee-makers do not overflow during normal operation.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope update: Adds pot coffee-makers to Note Z102 and Note Z105 of the standard so they fall within the Part 2-15 particular requirements.
  • Definitions: Introduces a formal definition of a pot coffee-maker (appliance without filter or lid intended to make coffee by bringing very fine ground coffee to the boil). Notes that these appliances may also heat other liquids (milk, soup).
  • Marking and instructions:
    • Visible level mark required to indicate the rated maximum fill; must be visible in the filling position.
    • Mandatory instruction wording including the caution: “Never fill the pot coffee-maker above the maximum level since hot foaming coffee or other liquids (e.g. milk) might overflow during heating.”
  • Construction requirement:
    • New subclause 22.Z101: operation shall not cause spillage of foaming coffee in normal use.
  • Performance/test method (compliance check):
    • Fill to manufacturer’s maximum level or 40% of total capacity, whichever is greater.
    • Add 8 g ground coffee per 100 ml water; particle size ≤ 89 µm.
    • Stir while heating until 75 °C, then stop stirring and continue to 90 °C, then continue for 3 minutes without stirring.
    • No overflow shall occur during the test.
  • Regulatory relationship: Annex ZZ maps the amendment to the safety objectives of Directive 2014/35/EU (Low Voltage Directive) - compliance with Part 1 + Part 2 contributes to presumption of conformity when the standard is cited in the Official Journal.

Applications and users

This amendment is relevant for:

  • Manufacturers and designers of pot coffee-makers and small liquid-heating appliances who need to ensure product safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Test laboratories and conformity assessors conducting performance and overflow tests per EN requirements.
  • Regulatory and compliance teams using harmonized standards to demonstrate conformity with the Low Voltage Directive and national implementations.
  • Importers, distributors and technical documentation authors who must include correct markings and user instructions.
