Overview

EN IEC 60335-2-14:2023/A1:2023 is an important European Standard developed by CLC that focuses on the safety of household and similar electrical kitchen machines. It sets particular requirements for electric kitchen machines designed for domestic use with a rated voltage not exceeding 250 V. This standard is a critical update and amendment to EN IEC 60335-2-14:2023, ensuring stricter safety and performance criteria for manufacturers, testers, and regulators within Europe.

Aligned with the International Electrotechnical Commission's IEC 60335-2-14:2016/A1:2019, this amendment reflects recent technical advances and clarifications on product safety, particularly concerning mechanical hazards and heating elements in kitchen machines.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application
The standard applies specifically to electric kitchen machines for household and similar uses, ensuring devices operate safely under usual conditions without causing injury or hazards.

  • Safety Requirements
The standard addresses stability, mechanical hazards, and heating components among kitchen appliances. It elaborates on design criteria such as the prevention of sharp edges on grinding screws and correct dimensioning of feed openings and housings to avoid user injury.

  • Mechanical Hazard Controls
Detailed evaluation parameters for grinding screws are introduced. These include projections with a height less than 4 mm, the dimensions between grinding screws and housing walls, and radius specifications to prevent hazards during operation.

  • Heating Element Safety
Amendments clarify requirements relating to heating parts of kitchen machines, ensuring risks of burns and overheating are minimized.

  • Implementation Dates
National standard bodies are required to adopt this amendment by November 22, 2024, and must withdraw conflicting standards by November 22, 2026.

Applications

EN IEC 60335-2-14:2023/A1:2023 is essential for:

  • Manufacturers of electric kitchen appliances such as food processors, mixers, grinders, and similar equipment to ensure compliance with European safety laws.
  • Product Safety Testers and Certification Bodies who verify kitchen machines meet EU safety directives.
  • Regulatory Authorities monitoring market safety and authorizing the sale of approved kitchen appliances.
  • Design Engineers who incorporate these safety requirements into developing new domestic kitchen machines.

By adhering to this standard, companies can enhance consumer confidence, reduce liability risks, and expedite market acceptance of their kitchen machines.

Related Standards
