Overview

EN 50363-4-1:2005 (CLC) defines the physical property requirements for PVC sheathing compounds used on low voltage energy cables. It is a part of the EN 50363 series and must be read in conjunction with EN 50363-0; the specified test methods are given in the EN 60811 series. The standard classifies PVC sheathing materials into types (TM 1–TM 5) and sets mandatory test criteria for mechanical, thermal and environmental performance.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Requirements cover the physical properties of PVC sheathing compounds (see Table 1 of the standard).
  • Compound types (Table 1):
    • TM 1 - 70 °C, general purpose for fixed-installation cables (may oversheath metallic-layer cables up to 80 °C)
    • TM 2 - 70 °C, flexible general purpose
    • TM 3 - 90 °C, flexible for high-temperature use
    • TM 4 - 70 °C, flexible for low-temperature use
    • TM 5 - 70 °C, oil-resistant flexible
  • Mechanical properties (tensile / elongation):
    • Median tensile strength (N/mm²): TM1 = 12.5; TM2–TM5 = 10.0
    • Median elongation at break (%): TM1 = 125; TM2–TM5 = 150
    • Requirements apply before and after defined ageing cycles (air oven ageing at specified temperatures and durations).
  • Ageing and thermal tests:
    • Oven ageing with specified temperatures and durations (e.g., TM3 uses 135 °C for 14×24 h).
    • Minimum thermal stability at 200 °C is specified for TM3 (240 min).
  • Oil immersion (TM5):
    • Immersion in mineral oil at 90 °C for 7×24 h; allowable tensile/elongation variations ±30%.
  • Degradation and stability tests:
    • Loss of mass after ageing (mg/cm²) - e.g., TM3 max 1.5 mg/cm², others typically 2.0 mg/cm².
    • Heat shock: 150 °C for 1 h - result: no cracks.
    • Pressure test at high temperature: indentation depth median max 50%.
  • Low-temperature performance:
    • Bending and elongation tests at specified low temperatures (TM4 tested at −30 °C) - elongation without break min 30%.

All test methods are referenced to the EN 60811 series.

Applications and who uses this standard

  • Cable manufacturers specifying or qualifying PVC sheathing compounds for low-voltage energy cables.
  • Material suppliers and compound formulators ensuring compliance with CLC requirements.
  • Independent test laboratories performing EN 60811 test methods against EN 50363-4-1 limits.
  • Specifiers, procurement engineers and compliance officers writing product specifications for building, industrial and utility cable systems.
  • Designers selecting sheathing types for temperature, oil exposure or low-temperature installations.

Related standards

  • EN 50363-0 (general requirements and cross-references)
  • EN 60811 series (test methods for cable materials)
  • CENELEC / CLC implementation documents

EN 50363-4-1:2005 is essential for ensuring reliable PVC sheaths, consistent test methods, and harmonized performance requirements in low voltage cable production and specification.
