Overview

EN 60969:1993/A2:2000 is a CENELEC amendment to the European standard EN 60969 for self-ballasted lamps for general lighting services. It adopts IEC 60969:1988/A2:2000 without modification and updates the performance requirements for integrated-ballast lamps. The amendment was approved by CENELEC on 1 September 2000 and set national implementation and withdrawal dates for conflicting standards.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope: Performance requirements for self-ballasted lamps used in general lighting services (based on IEC 60969 amendment 2:2000).
  • Lamp wattage (clause 6): The amendment replaces clause 6 to specify that the initial wattage dissipated by the lamp shall not exceed 115% of the rated wattage. This explicit limit is a primary technical change introduced by A2.
  • Standards governance: Prepared by IEC TC 34 / SC 34A (Lamps) and issued via the IEC–CENELEC parallel vote. The amendment exists in English, French and German official versions and may be translated by CENELEC members.
  • Implementation timeline: CENELEC fixed dates for national adoption and withdrawal of conflicting standards (as part of the amendment publication process).

Note: The amendment text incorporated into EN 60969 is specific to performance criteria; the base standard contains broader test and performance provisions for lamp behaviour and compatibility. This amendment specifically updates the wattage requirement.

Practical applications

This amendment and the base EN/IEC 60969 series are relevant for:

  • Lamp and luminaire manufacturers - to design and certify self-ballasted lamps that meet European performance limits.
  • Test laboratories and conformity assessors - to verify initial lamp wattage and other performance criteria against the amended limit.
  • Regulators and national standards bodies - for adopting or endorsing the amendment as a national standard.
  • Lighting specifiers, procurement teams and facility managers - to ensure purchased lamps meet standards-based performance expectations and energy rating declarations.

Related standards

  • IEC 60969 (base international standard for self-ballasted lamps) - EN 60969 incorporates IEC text.
  • National adoptions and translations by CENELEC members - the amendment must be implemented nationally according to CENELEC rules.
