Overview
EN 60335-2-74:2003/A2:2009 is the CENELEC amendment to the European safety standard for portable immersion heaters (also published as IEC 60335-2-74:2002/A2:2009). It defines particular safety requirements and test arrangements that supplement the general requirements of IEC/EN 60335-1 for household and similar electrical appliances. Amendment A2 was approved by CENELEC on 1 October 2009 and is published in the three official languages (English, French, German).
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and precedence
- Applies to portable immersion heaters as a product-family standard and takes precedence over horizontal or generic standards covering the same hazards.
- Where Part 2 does not provide specific requirements for a hazard, the general requirements in Part 1 (EN/IEC 60335-1) apply.
- Safety of users
- Clarifies vulnerable user groups: persons (including children) with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or with lack of experience/knowledge, and children playing with the appliance.
- Emphasises instruction, supervision and protective measures to reduce risk to these groups.
- Testing and conformity
- Specifies the sequence and application of tests (for example, the amendment requires the additional test of Clause 21.1 to be carried out before the tests of Clause 8).
- Amendment A2 supplements or modifies clauses of the base EN 60335-2-74:2003; implementation and withdrawal dates were set for national adoption.
- Thermal hazards
- References ergonomics guidance for hot surfaces (ISO 13732-1) in the bibliography; surface-temperature and contact-response considerations are acknowledged as part of the safety evaluation.
Applications and who uses this standard
- Manufacturers and product designers of portable immersion heaters use EN 60335-2-74 to design safe products, select components and prepare user instructions.
- Test laboratories and conformity assessors apply the standard’s test methods and sequence to verify compliance with European safety requirements.
- Regulatory authorities and market surveillance bodies rely on the standard for enforcement and certification decisions.
- Compliance engineers and technical authors reference the standard when preparing declarations of conformity, technical files and safety documentation.
