Overview
EN 61076-3-117:2009 (IEC 61076-3-117) is a detail specification for protective housings used with 8‑way shielded and unshielded rectangular connectors in industrial environments. It defines housings with push‑pull coupling (Variant 14 related to IEC 61076‑3‑106) that upgrade existing connector interfaces conforming to the IEC 60603‑7 series to achieve IP65 and IP67 degrees of protection (per IEC 60529). The standard covers dimensional, sealing and interfacing requirements so that 8‑way connector assemblies meet rugged industrial use and maintain the common mating configurations of the IEC 60603‑7 interface.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and interface compatibility: Applies to 8‑way shielded and unshielded rectangular connectors using the IEC 60603‑7 family of interfaces; variant 14 specifies push‑pull coupling.
- Environmental protection: Requirements and verification for sealing to IP65 and IP67 (ingress protection against dust and water).
- Dimensional and mounting data: Fixed and free connector dimensions, panel cut‑out outlines and mounting instructions to ensure mechanical compatibility.
- Electrical and transmission characteristics: Clauses cover clearance/creepage, voltage proof, current‑carrying capacity, contact resistance, insulation resistance and signal integrity considerations.
- Mechanical performance: Tests and limits for engagement/separation forces, coupling effectiveness and mating cycles (durability under mechanical stress).
- Climatic and environmental testing: Climatic category definitions and test schedules drawn from IEC 60068 series (temperature, damp heat cyclic).
- Test schedules and methods: Detailed basic and full test groups (P, AP, BP, CP, DP, EP) for preconditioning, dynamic stress, continuity, mechanical and electrical performance, per IEC 60512 test methods.
Applications
- Upgrading standard rectangular 8‑way connectors to ruggedized, sealed assemblies for:
- Industrial automation and robotics
- Factory‑floor I/O and control cabinets
- Outdoor or washdown environments requiring IP65/IP67 protection
- Transportation and mobile equipment where vibration and ingress protection are critical
- Ensures reliable electrical and signal connectivity when a push‑pull coupling protective housing is required.
Who should use this standard
- Connector and housing manufacturers designing compliant products
- Product engineers and system integrators specifying sealed connector assemblies
- Test laboratories performing type and qualification testing
- Procurement and compliance teams verifying conformity to industrial connector requirements
Related standards
- IEC 60603‑7 series (common mating configurations)
- IEC 61076‑3‑106 (related variant definitions)
- IEC 60529 (IP Code)
- IEC 60512 (connector tests and measurements)
- IEC 60068 series (environmental testing)
- IEC 61076‑1 (generic connector specification)
This specification is essential for anyone specifying or producing rectangular connector housings to meet industrial sealing, mechanical and electrical requirements while maintaining compatibility with the IEC 60603‑7 8‑way interface.

The object of IEC is to promote international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations. 2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all interested IEC National Committees.
