Overview

EN 12629-6:2004/FprA1 is a European safety standard developed by CEN (European Committee for Standardization) under Technical Committee CEN/TC 151. This standard addresses safety requirements for machines used in the manufacture of constructional products from concrete and calcium-silicate, specifically focusing on stationary and mobile equipment for the production of precast reinforced products. It is part of a broader series covering various machinery involved in concrete and calcium-silicate construction product manufacturing.

This document serves as a Type C standard following EN ISO 12100 principles and complements the general safety provisions outlined in EN 12629-1:2000+A1:2010. It sets forth safety requirements, hazard identification, protective measures, verification procedures, and information for use to mitigate risks associated with machinery operation, thereby enhancing workplace safety in the precast concrete industry.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application
EN 12629-6 applies to both stationary and mobile machinery designed specifically for the manufacture of precast reinforced concrete products. It also covers machines used for non-reinforced moulded products.

  • Hazard Identification
The standard provides a comprehensive list of significant hazards relevant to these machines, including mechanical, electrical, ergonomic, and operational risks. Hazard zones associated with equipment are visually detailed in annexes.

  • Safety Requirements and Protective Measures
    Detailed requirements include:

    • Design principles according to EN ISO 12100 for eliminating or reducing risks.
    • Requirements for guarding, interlocking devices, emergency stops, and control stations.
    • Specifications for semi-automatic and automatic operations.
    • Ergonomic considerations to accommodate operators safely and efficiently.
    • Adaptations for mobile machinery ensuring safety during transit and operation.
  • Verification and Testing
The standard outlines verification procedures to assess compliance, including visual inspections, performance checks, and measurement tests. Key systems such as emergency stops, guarding, control units, noise levels, and automated functions are subject to mandatory checks.

  • Information for Use
Manufacturers must provide clear safety instructions and documentation aligned with the requirements of EN 12629-1:2000+A1:2010 to inform users about safe operation, maintenance, and risk management.

  • Relationship to EU Directives
EN 12629-6 supports conformity with the EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, ensuring that machinery meets essential health and safety requirements mandated in EU regulations.

Applications

EN 12629-6:2004/FprA1 is vital for:

  • Manufacturers of precast reinforced concrete products using specialized stationary or mobile machinery.
  • Designers and engineers responsible for developing safe machinery compliant with European safety and ergonomic standards.
  • Safety officers and assessors conducting risk assessments and verification of machinery in construction product manufacturing environments.
  • Compliance managers ensuring that machinery meets EU safety legislation, enabling market access within the European Economic Area.
  • Operators and maintenance personnel who rely on clear safety guidelines for the use and upkeep of concrete and calcium-silicate product manufacturing equipment.

Related Standards

EN 12629-6 complements and references multiple safety and ergonomic standards including but not limited to:

  • EN 12629-1:2000+A1:2010 – Common requirements for machines producing constructional products from concrete and calcium-silicate.
  • EN ISO 12100 – Basic concepts and general principles for machine safety design.
  • EN 349 – Safety of machinery - Minimum gaps to avoid crushing.
  • EN 547 series – Human body measurements related to machinery access.
  • EN 574 – Two-hand control devices.
  • EN 953 – Guards - Design and construction requirements.
  • EN ISO 13857 – Safety distances to prevent hazards to limbs.
  • EN 61310-1 – Requirements for visual, acoustic, and tactile signals.
  • EN ISO 14122 series – Permanent means of access to machinery.

By aligning with these complementary standards, EN 12629-6 ensures a holistic approach to machinery safety and operator protection in the manufacture of precast reinforced concrete construction products.
