Aluminium and aluminium alloys - Sheet, strip and plate - Part 4: Tolerances on shape and dimensions for cold-rolled products

This part of EN 485 specifies the tolerances on shape and dimensions for wrought aluminium and aluminium alloy sheets, strips and plates obtained by cold-rolling, for general engineering applications. It does not apply to semi-finished rolled products in coiled form to be subjected to further rolling (reroll stock) or to special products such as corrugated, embossed, painted, etc. sheets and strips or to special applications such as aerospace, can stock, etc. which are dealt with in separate European standards. Technical conditions for inspection and delivery of those products are specified in EN 485-1.

Overview

EN 485-4:1993 is a European (CEN) standard that specifies the tolerances on shape and dimensions for wrought aluminium and aluminium alloy sheets, strips and plates produced by cold-rolling for general engineering applications. It defines which dimensional and form tolerances apply to these finished products and clarifies which product types and applications are excluded from its scope.

Key topics and requirements

This part of EN 485 focuses on practical, non-numeric requirements that govern finished cold-rolled aluminium products. Main technical topics include:

  • Dimensional tolerances for finished products such as thickness, width and length (as applicable to cold-rolled sheet, strip and plate).
  • Shape (form) tolerances that relate to flatness and overall geometric quality of the sheet/strip/plate.
  • Scope limitations - the standard applies to wrought, cold-rolled products intended for general engineering uses and explicitly excludes:
    • Semi-finished coiled products intended for further rolling (reroll stock)
    • Special product types (e.g., corrugated, embossed, painted sheets and strips)
    • Special application categories (e.g., aerospace, can stock) handled by separate European standards
  • Reference to inspection/delivery conditions - technical conditions for inspection and delivery are specified in EN 485-1 and should be used alongside EN 485-4 for procurement and quality control.

Note: EN 485-4 sets out the types and classes of tolerances and their intended applications, while EN 485-1 provides the detailed inspection and delivery procedures.

Applications and who uses it

EN 485-4 is used throughout the supply chain wherever cold-rolled aluminium sheet, strip or plate is produced, procured or used for general engineering purposes. Typical users include:

  • Aluminium mill producers specifying finished product tolerances for cold-rolled stock
  • Metal service centers and distributors checking conformity of incoming material
  • Design and manufacturing engineers who need assured dimensional/shape quality for sheet-metal components
  • Quality assurance and inspection teams applying consistent tolerance criteria
  • Procurement specialists who write material specifications and purchase orders

This standard supports consistent product performance in industries such as general manufacturing, construction, automotive (non-aerospace), and consumer goods where cold-rolled aluminium is employed.

Related standards

  • EN 485-1 - Technical conditions for inspection and delivery (refer to this for inspection procedures and delivery requirements)
  • Other EN standards cover special products and applications (aerospace, can stock, corrugated/embossed or painted sheets) and should be consulted when relevant.
