Overview

EN 16383:2016 (CEN) defines the equipment, specimen preparation and test procedures to determine the hygrothermal behaviour of external thermal insulation composite systems with renders (ETICS) delivered as a kit. The standard is intended for evaluating how an assembled ETICS responds to cyclic heating, wetting, cooling and freeze/thaw actions that simulate realistic exposure and ageing of façade insulation systems.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope: Applies to ETICS kits (adhesive, thermal insulation product(s), reinforced base coat, finishing layers, fixings) used as building thermal insulation.
  • Principle: Expose a prepared test wall to a sequence of hygrothermal cycles and assess visible and mechanical deterioration.
  • Test cycles (as specified):
    • 80 cycles of heating and wetting (heating the surface to (70 ± 5) °C, maintaining low surface humidity, then wetting with (1.5 ± 0.5) l/(m2·min) at (15 ± 5) °C; specified durations apply).
    • 5 cycles of heating and cooling (detailed times and temperatures are defined in the standard).
    • 30 cycles of wetting, freezing and thawing (includes an initial wetting stage, freeze hold, thaw at ambient, and re-wetting).
  • Test devices: Controlled surface heating (to specified temperatures with surface RH < 30 %), uniform spray wetting (specified flow rate and water temperature), and equipment to perform freezing/thawing cycles - each device must meet the test condition tolerances in Clause 7.
  • Test wall preparation: Kits are applied per system-holder instructions. Typical specimen dimensions are given (e.g., single-opening wall: 2.5 m × 2.0 m with a central opening 0.5 ± 0.1 m). The upper 2/3 is usually finished with the finishing layer(s); the lower 1/3 retains only the reinforced base coat. Conditioning for at least 28 days at (20 ± 10) °C is required before testing.
  • Assessment and reporting: After cycles inspect for blisters, cracking, delamination, flaking and other visible damage. Test report must reference EN 16383 and include product identification, application details and observed results. Optional follow-up tests (e.g., impact resistance, tensile bond) are referenced.

Applications and users

  • Manufacturers and system holders developing or marketing ETICS kits (durability verification, product development).
  • Independent testing laboratories performing type testing or compliance verification.
  • Certification bodies, specifiers, architects, façade consultants and building control authorities assessing ETICS suitability for climate exposure and service life claims.
  • Useful for quality assurance, comparative performance assessment and supporting technical documentation for product declarations.
