Overview

EN 13496:2025 (CEN) specifies test equipment and procedures to determine the mechanical properties - tensile strength and elongation - of rectangular and triaxial glass fibre meshes used as reinforcement for the base coat in external thermal insulation composite kits with renders (ETIC kits). The 2025 edition supersedes EN 13496:2013 and introduces triaxial mesh testing, a 28‑day alkaline conditioning option and revised result‑accuracy rules.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Tests apply to glass fibre meshes used in ETIC (external thermal insulation composite) systems with renders.
  • Test principle: Maximum tensile strength and corresponding elongation measured in warp and weft directions (for triaxial meshes both weft directions).
  • Specimens:
    • Minimum length: 300 mm; seven test specimens required per combination of test direction and conditioning.
    • Sampling rules: discard first metre of roll and edge areas; cut at mesh openings; ensure consistent thread counts across specimens.
  • Apparatus & settings:
    • Calliper accuracy: 0.05 mm; tensile machine crosshead speed: 100 ± 5 mm/min; force measurement accuracy: ≥ 10 N.
    • Clamps must prevent slippage without damaging the specimen (e.g., rubber-coated).
  • Dimensions & calculations:
    • Thread count determined from distance across 21 threads; mesh size and mesh opening calculated per specified formulae.
    • Mass per unit area measured per EN 12127:1997 (1 m² specimen).
  • Conditioning:
    • A - no additional conditioning (storage at 23 ± 5 °C and 50 ± 5 % RH for ≥24 h).
    • B - 24 h warm alkaline conditioning at 60 ± 2 °C.
    • C - 28‑day alkaline conditioning at 23 ± 2 °C.
    • Alkaline solution recipe per 1 000 ml deionised water: Ca(OH)2 (0.50 ± 0.01) g, NaOH (1.00 ± 0.02) g, KOH (4.00 ± 0.08) g.
    • Post‑conditioning wash: HCl rinse (5 ml HCl 35% diluted in 4 L water), successive water baths, then dry ≥48 h at standard conditions.
  • Reporting: Test conditions, specimen details (threads, directions), conditioning, tensile strength and elongation results, and any deviations.

Applications and users

  • Who uses it: test laboratories, glass fibre mesh and ETIC kit manufacturers, product certification bodies, specification engineers, architects and quality control teams in construction and façade systems.
  • Why it matters: ensures reinforced ETIC base coats meet mechanical performance expectations (durability, crack resistance and load transfer), supports product declarations and regulatory compliance across European markets.

4 Principle
The maximum tensile strength and corresponding elongation of glass fibre meshes are determined using
a tensile testing machine. The tensile strength of the meshes shall be tested in both test directions, the
warp and the weft direction. For triaxial meshes, two weft directions are recognized and both shall be
tested. Three types of conditioning can be carried out before the test:
— A, no additional conditioning;
— B, 24 h warm alkali conditioning;
— C, 28-day alkali conditioning.
