Overview
EN ISO 105-B08:1999 is an international standard published by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) that specifies methods for quality control of blue wool reference materials 1 to 7. These reference materials are essential components used in the ISO 105-B series of textile testing standards, specifically for assessing colour fastness to light in dyed wool fabrics.
The standard outlines a rigorous procedure combining both instrumental and visual assessments to ensure consistency and reliability in production batches of blue wool references. By maintaining strict quality control, the standard supports accurate and reproducible testing outcomes for colour fastness, a critical parameter in textile manufacturing and evaluation.
Key Topics
Scope and Application
- Quality control method designed for blue wool reference materials 1 to 7.
- Focused on wool fabrics dyed for use as reference standards in colour fastness to light tests.
- Not applicable to blue wool reference 8 due to its long fading times.
Test Procedures
- Spectrophotometric assessment of evenness of dyeing across fabric specimens.
- Visual and instrumental evaluation of fading characteristics after exposure to controlled light sources.
- Comparison of test specimens to master reference materials to evaluate colour changes.
- Use of specialized equipment such as Xenon arc fading apparatus, spectrophotometers, and colour-matching cabinets.
Evaluation Metrics
- Calculation of colour differences using the CMC (2:1) colour difference formula.
- Grey scale ratings for colour change (grey scale 3 and 4) to quantify fading.
- Visual assessments conducted by experienced assessors under standardized lighting conditions.
- Acceptance criteria based on deviation levels between test specimens and master references.
Storage Recommendations
- Blue wool references should be stored in cool, dry, and dark environments free from fumes to prevent deterioration.
Applications
EN ISO 105-B08:1999 plays a vital role in the textile industry and quality assurance laboratories where colour fastness testing is critical. The standard’s practical applications include:
Production Quality Control
- Ensuring the consistency of blue wool reference materials used as calibration standards in colour fastness testing.
- Verifying batch-to-batch homogeneity in dyeing and fading properties for accurate textile evaluations.
Textile Testing and Research
- Serving as a benchmark in laboratories performing colour fastness to light tests following the ISO 105-B method series.
- Assisting in development of new dyed wool textiles by providing reliable reference points.
Certification and Compliance
- Supporting manufacturers and testing bodies in meeting international requirements for textile colour durability.
- Enhancing reproducibility and comparability of colour fastness test results worldwide.
Related Standards
EN ISO 105-B08:1999 is part of the broader ISO 105 series covering tests for colour fastness in textiles, with relevant related standards including:
- ISO 105-B01:1994 - Colour fastness to light: Daylight conditions.
- ISO 105-B02:1994 - Colour fastness to artificial light: Xenon arc fading test.

- ISO 105-A02:1993 - Grey scale for assessing change in colour.
- ISO 105-J03:1995 - Calculation of colour differences.
These standards collectively provide a comprehensive framework for testing and assessing colour durability and quality in textiles, ensuring global consistency and accuracy.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national Standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work
of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Esch member body interested in a subject for
which a technical committee has been established has the right to be
represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.
International Standard ISO 105-B08 was prepared by Technical Committee
lSO/TC 38, Textiles, Subcommittee SC 1, Tests for coloured textiles and
coloran ts.
ISO 105 was previously published in thirteen “Parts ”, each designated by
a letter (e.g. “Part A ”), with publication dates between 1978 and 1985.
Esch part contained a series of “sections ”, each designated by the re-
spective part letter and by a two-digit serial number (e.g. “Section AO1 “).
These sections are now being republished as separate documents, them-
selves designated “Parts” but retaining their earlier alphanumeric desig-
nations. A complete list of these Parts is given in ISO 105-AOI .
Annexes A and B of this part of ISO 105 are for information only.
