Overview
EN 622-1:2003 - Fibreboards - Specifications - Part 1: General requirements is a CEN standard that defines the common, uncoated fibreboard requirements applicable to all fibreboard types defined in EN 316. It sets the baseline for dimensional tolerances, moisture content, formaldehyde performance and the factory and external verification procedures for fibreboards (hardboards, medium boards, softboards and dry process boards/MDF) at dispatch from the producing factory.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Applies to uncoated fibreboards as classified in EN 316. It supersedes EN 622-1:1997.
- Dimensional tolerances: Thickness, length, width, squareness and edge straightness tolerances are specified (see Table 1 and Table 2 of the standard). Example tolerances given include squareness at 2 mm/m and edge straightness at 1.5 mm/m.
- Moisture content: Typical dispatch moisture ranges are 4 % to 9 % for hard, medium and soft boards and 4 % to 11 % for MDF.
- Density control (MDF): A ±7 % tolerance on mean density within a panel is specified for dry process boards.
- Formaldehyde requirements: Formaldehyde potential (perforator value) and formaldehyde emission classes (E1/E2) are included. For dry-process boards (MDF), EN 120/ENV 717 test methods and numerical limits are given (E1 and E2 perforator limits and steady-state emission thresholds). Perforator values are referenced to a moisture content of 6.5 %; correction for other moisture contents is required.
- Verification and testing: Defines test methods and verification procedures. Factory production control and sampling follow EN 326-2, and consignment inspection follows EN 326-3. Recommended maximum test intervals are given (e.g., formaldehyde potential: 24 h per board type for E1; moisture content: 8 h per board type).
- Marking and colour coding: Marking follows the relevant part (EN 622-2 to EN 622-5). A voluntary two-colour coding system for intended use and exposure class is specified in Annex A.
Applications and users
- Manufacturers of hardboard, medium boards, softboards and MDF use EN 622-1:2003 to set quality and dispatch controls.
- Quality-control and testing laboratories apply the standard’s test methods and sampling intervals to demonstrate compliance.
- Inspection agencies and certification bodies rely on EN 326-series procedures referenced by EN 622-1 for external control.
- Specifiers, architects and product purchasers use the standard to ensure material suitability (dimensional stability, formaldehyde class, moisture behaviour) for interior or structural applications.
