Abstract

This document specifies requirements for the execution i.e. the manufacture and the installation of cold-formed structural aluminium profiled sheeting, and for the installation of structural members made of aluminium for roof, ceiling, floor, wall and cladding applications.
This document applies to structures designed according to the EN 1999 series.
This document applies to profiled sheeting to be designed according to EN 1999 1 4.
This document also specifies requirements for the execution i.e. the manufacture and the installation of structures made from cold-formed profiled sheeting for roof, ceiling, floor and wall applications under predominately static loading or seismic loading conditions and their documentation.
This document covers products of Structural Class I and II and structural profiled sheeting in Structural Class III according to EN 1999 1 4 used in structures.
NOTE 1   In National Annexes of EN 1999 1 4 specifications can be given regarding the use of the Structural Classes.
Structural profiled sheeting is understood here to be profiled sheet, such as trapezoidal or sinusoidal (Figure 1).
Perforated and micro profiled sheeting are also covered by this part.
This document also covers spacer constructions between the outer and inner or upper and lower skins as well as supporting members for roofs, walls and ceilings made from cold-formed profiled sheeting and the connections and attachments of the afore mentioned elements as long as they are involved in load transfer, it also covers connections and attachments of these elements (Figure 2).
A combination of steel and aluminium structural profiled sheeting are permitted, e.g. liner trays made of steel, stiffened by profiles made of aluminium. In this case, EN 1090 4 and this document apply.
This document also covers the deconstruction of structures made from cold-formed profiled sheeting and structural members for roof, ceiling, floor and wall applications.
This document does not cover the manufacturing of structural members of all structural classes according to EN 1999 1 4. These products are covered by EN 1090 3.
Welded sections are excluded from this part and are covered by EN 1090 3 except seal welding in low-stress areas.
Composite structural profiled sheeting where the interaction between dissimilar materials are an integral part of the structural behaviour such as sandwich panels and composite floors are not covered by this standard.
NOTE 2   The structures covered in this standard can be for example
-   single- or multi-skin roofs, whereby the load-bearing structure (lower skin) as well as the actual roof covering (upper skin) or both consist of structural profiled sheeting;
-   single- or multi-skin walls whereby the load-bearing structure (inner skin) as well as the actual cladding (outer skin) or both consist of structural profiled sheeting; or
-   suspended ceilings for interior fitting.

FprEN 1090-5 is a draft European Standard from CEN for the execution of steel structures and aluminium structures, focused here on cold-formed structural aluminium elements and cold-formed structures for roof, ceiling, floor, wall and cladding applications. It specifies how these products are manufactured, installed, documented, inspected and, where relevant, deconstructed for structures designed to the EN 1999 series. It is aimed at designers, manufacturers, installers and the people who check quality, traceability and acceptance of aluminium building-envelope and lightweight structural systems.

What does FprEN 1090-5 specify?

FprEN 1090-5 sets technical requirements for execution, not design alone. It covers cold-formed structural aluminium profiled sheeting, structural members made of aluminium for installation in roof, ceiling, floor, wall and cladding applications, and related spacer constructions, connections and attachments when they take part in load transfer.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex ABasic requirements for profiled sheeting, including supporting members, edge detailing, building physics and roof drainage
Annex BAdditional design requirements for profiled sheeting, including serviceability, support widths, diaphragms, cantilevers and openings
Annex CInstallation records
Annex DGeometrical tolerances
Annex EGalvanic corrosion
Annex FAdditional information to be specified or followed when not otherwise stated

The scope includes structures designed according to the EN 1999 series and profiled sheeting designed according to EN 1999-1-4. It also covers structures made from cold-formed profiled sheeting under predominantly static loading or seismic loading conditions, as well as deconstruction of these structures.

The document excludes manufacturing of structural members of all structural classes according to EN 1999-1-4, welded sections except seal welding in low-stress areas, and composite structural profiled sheeting where interaction between dissimilar materials is part of the structural behaviour, such as sandwich panels and composite floors. A steel-aluminium combination is permitted, but then EN 1090-4 and this document apply together.

What are the key requirements of FprEN 1090-5?

FprEN 1090-5 is built around controlled execution: specify the work, use suitable products, manufacture within tolerances, fasten and install correctly, then inspect and record what was done. In practice, the document asks the manufacturer and installer to define the method, prove traceability, and keep the finished work within the design assumptions.

Documentation, traceability and quality control

Clause 4 requires an execution specification from the manufacturer and an installation specification from the installer, plus layout drawings and defined geometrical tolerances. It also requires installation quality documentation, installation documentation and detailed traceability of cold-formed aluminium structural profiled sheeting from purchase through to installation. For the reader, this means the work is not just built - it must also be demonstrable on paper and traceable by batch or production record.

Products, materials and fire-related provisions

Clause 5 requires materials to match the specified material provisions, or for their properties to be explicitly specified if they are outside the listed standards. Products have to be identified clearly, and aluminium products from the listed materials require EN 10204 inspection document 3.1. Clause 5 also ties in external fire performance testing for roofing elements to CEN/TS 1187 and EN 13501-5, and points reaction to fire, resistance to fire and release of dangerous substances to EN 1090-1. For practice, this is the clause that governs what can be delivered, how it is documented, and which fire-related checks apply.

Manufacturing, welding and fastening

Clause 6 requires structural profiled sheeting to be cold formed from aluminium sheet or strip/coil, with no visible cracks at bent areas. Cutting has to preserve edge quality and geometry, and punching has to follow the document’s tolerances. Clause 7 allows site welding for joints, overlaps, attachments and penetrations where suitable for the material, with clean, dry surfaces and visual checking of weld tightness. Clauses 8.1 to 8.6 cover screws, blind rivets and connections to supporting members, including tool settings, washer compression, side-lap connections and edge and field spacing. In practice, this is where the installer chooses the right fastening method and sets it up correctly.

Installation, safety and site handling

Clause 9 is the main installation clause. It requires competent companies and experienced personnel, checks of preceding works, available layout drawings, proper tools and safe site conditions before work starts. It also covers storage, unloading, lifting, laying, securing sheets immediately after laying, protecting openings, handling weather interruptions, cleaning off swarf and dirt, and inspection after installation. For roofs, it also requires visible marking and warning signs for diaphragm areas and written confirmation for lightning protection interfaces.

Surface protection, tolerances, inspection and deconstruction

Clause 10 deals with corrosion protection, including the natural oxide layer of aluminium and extra protection in aggressive environments, and it points to Annex E for galvanic corrosion control. Clause 11 and Annex D set essential and functional geometrical tolerances for profiled sheeting, members and holes. Clause 12 requires a planned inspection and testing regime, with documented correction of non-conforming products and checks of fastening and site welding. Clause 13 covers deconstruction and applies the same safety-minded approach as installation, with planned removal and documentation.

What terms does FprEN 1090-5 define?

  • Cassette profile - roll formed, press-braked or folded structural profiled sheeting, with or without stiffeners, used as a substructure for walls and roofs.
  • Component I - the component facing the head of the fastener, or the swage head for blind rivets.
  • Component II - the second component in the connection, usually the supporting member.
  • Decking - load-bearing profiled sheeting used to support items such as insulation and outer skin.
  • Edge stiffener - a supporting plate or profile at the longitudinal edge of a laying area that replaces missing neighbouring sheeting and stiffens the free edge.
  • Layout drawing - a drawing showing the position of structural components and installation details.
  • Structural cold-formed profiled sheeting - a structural part such as trapezoidal, sinusoidal, standing seam or cassette profile sheeting.
  • Tolerance - the difference between the upper and lower limit of size, used here for dimensional control.

Who uses FprEN 1090-5?

FprEN 1090-5 is used by designers working to the EN 1999 series, fabricators of cold-formed aluminium sheeting and members, and installers of roof, wall, ceiling and floor systems. It is also relevant to site supervisors, quality managers, inspectors and buyers who need to define material identification, traceability, tolerances and installation records. The main industries are building envelopes, cladding, roofing, suspended ceilings and lightweight structural aluminium construction.

What changed in FprEN 1090-5 from the previous edition?

FprEN 1090-5 is identified as the draft that will supersede EN 1090-5:2017.

requirements for cold-formed structural aluminium elements and cold-formed structures for roof,
ceiling, floor and wall applications
prEN 1090-5:2025 (E)
1 Scope
This document specifies requirements for the execution i.e. the manufacture and the installation of cold-
formed structural aluminium profiled sheeting, and for the installation of structural members made of
aluminium for roof, ceiling, floor, wall and cladding applications.
This document applies to structures designed according to the EN 1999 series.
This document applies to profiled sheeting to be designed according to EN 1999-1-4.
This document also specifies requirements for the execution i.e. the manufacture and the installation of
structures made from cold-formed profiled sheeting for roof, ceiling, floor and wall applications under
predominately static loading or seismic loading conditions and their documentation.
This document covers products of Structural Class I and II and structural profiled sheeting in Structural
Class III according to EN 1999-1-4 used in structures.
NOTE 1 In National Annexes of EN 1999-1-4 specifications can be given regarding the use of the Structural
Classes.
Structural profiled sheeting is understood here to be profiled sheet, such as trapezoidal or sinusoidal
(Figure 1).
Perforated and micro profiled sheeting are also covered by this part.
This document also covers spacer constructions between the outer and inner or upper and lower skins
as well as supporting members for roofs, walls and ceilings made from cold-formed profiled sheeting and
the connections and attachments of the afore mentioned elements as long as they are involved in load
transfer, it also covers connections and attachments of these elements (Figure 2).
A combination of steel and aluminium structural profiled sheeting are permitted, e.g. liner trays made of
steel, stiffened by profiles made of aluminium. In this case, EN 1090-4 and this document apply.
This document also covers the deconstruction of structures made from cold-formed profiled sheeting and
structural members for roof, ceiling, floor and wall applications.
This document does not cover the manufacturing of structural members of all structural classes
according to EN 1999-1-4. These products are covered by EN 1090-3.
Welded sections are excluded from this part and are covered by EN 1090-3 except seal welding in low-
stress areas.
Composite structural profiled sheeting where the interaction between dissimilar materials are an integral
part of the structural behaviour such as sandwich panels and composite floors are not covered by this
standard.
NOTE 2 The structures covered in this standard can be for example
— single- or multi-skin roofs, whereby the load-bearing structure (lower skin) as well as the actual roof covering
(upper skin) or both consist of structural profiled sheeting;
— single- or multi-skin walls whereby the load-bearing structure (inner skin) as well as the actual cladding (outer
skin) or both consist of structural profiled sheeting; or
— suspended ceilings for interior fitting.
