Overview
EN 1777:2004/prA1 is a European standard that sets safety requirements and testing protocols for hydraulic platforms (HPs) specifically designed for fire fighting and rescue services. Developed by the Technical Committee CEN/TC 192, this standard ensures that HPs used in emergency operations meet rigorous health, safety, and performance criteria. The update prA1 aligns the original EN 1777:2004 with the revised EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, preserving its status as a harmonized standard within the European Union.
Key Topics
Safety Requirements for Hydraulic Platforms
EN 1777:2004/prA1 defines critical safety specifications including structural integrity, operational stability, and fail-safe design elements. It stresses requirements such as electrically conducting connections between HPs and bearing surfaces to mitigate electrical hazards during use.Drive System Specifications
The amendment introduces detailed safety criteria for wire rope and chain drive systems, including redundancy mechanisms to ensure safety in case of component failure. Multiple ropes or chains must be present to limit vertical platform movement to a maximum of 0.2 meters if a system fails.Operating Instructions and User Information
The standard mandates comprehensive operating instructions that address:- Vibration exposure levels affecting human operators
- Information on potential non-ionising radiation risks relevant to operators with medical implants
- Detailed commissioning and maintenance guidance for trained personnel, including repair/replacement criteria for critical parts like wire ropes and chains.
Testing and Verification Procedures
EN 1777:2004/prA1 requires static and dynamic tests to validate platform safety and performance, backed by manufacturer or authorized representative test reports, ensuring traceability and accountability.Markings and Documentation
The standard specifies necessary markings such as CE marking, manufacturer details, serial numbers, nominal power, and configuration mass - all vital for compliance, identification, and operational safety.
Applications
Fire Fighting and Rescue Operations
Hydraulic platforms conforming to EN 1777:2004/prA1 are fundamental tools for firefighting units and emergency rescue services. They enable firefighters and rescuers to safely reach elevated areas during fire suppression, victim extraction, and disaster response.Equipment Manufacturing and Quality Assurance
Manufacturers designing hydraulic platforms can use this standard to ensure their products meet EU safety regulations and are eligible for CE marking. Compliance aids market access across EU member states and supports global competitiveness.Maintenance and Training Programs
Maintenance teams and training instructors leverage the detailed safety and testing requirements to develop effective upkeep and operational protocols tailored to emergency hydraulic platforms, enhancing longevity and safety.

Foreword
This document (EN 1777:2004/prA1:2008) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 192 “Fire
service equipment”, the secretariat of which is held by BSI.
This document is currently submitted to the Unique Acceptance Procedure.
This document has been prepared under a mandate given to CEN by the European Commission and the
European Free Trade Association, and supports essential requirements of EU Directive(s).
For relationship with EU Directive(s), see informative Annexes ZA and ZB, which are integral parts of this
document.
The reason for amending the published standard EN 1777:2004 are as follows:
The revision of the EC-Machinery Directive 98/37/EC into 2006/42/EC requires the modification of published
European Standards cited in the Official Journal of the European Communities under that Directive. If no
amendment is made by the committee experts, then the standard would be updated with an Annex Z stating
that it does NOT meet the requirements of 2006/42/EC. This would result in the standard being removed from
the Official Journal and becoming a non-harmonized standard.
To keep the published standard EN 1777:2004 as a harmonized standard it was carefully checked against the
new EC-Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and it was established that EN 1777:2004 meets the Essential
Health and Safety Requirements (EHSR) of the new EC-Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC in nearly all
requirements of the standard. Only a few requirements were established for a necessary amendment.
CEN/TC 192 has therefore decided to use the Type 2 amendment track, which is a 5 months UAP
amendment with the addition of a new Annex ZB, only few technical update as well as minor editorial
changes.
