Overview

EN ISO 15236-2:2017 (Steel cord conveyor belts - Part 2: Preferred belt types) specifies preferred constructions for steel cord conveyor belts that use longitudinal steel cords as reinforcement. It defines standard belt type series based on the general construction rules in ISO 15236-1 and supports reliable on-site joining of long belts supplied by different manufacturers. The document is published by CEN as EN ISO 15236-2:2017 and aligns with ISO 15236-4 for vulcanized joints.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and structure: Specifies preferred belt types (A, B, C) and subtypes (e.g. A1, A2, B1, B2) intended for general conveyor use.
  • Design parameters: Tables provide recommended nominal breaking strengths, cord diameters, cord pitch (spacing), cover thicknesses, and typical number of cords for common belt widths and strength classes (series cover strengths from several hundred up to several thousand N/mm depending on type).
  • Belt types:
    • Type A: Hot-dip zinc coated steel cords; A1 and A2 variants optimized for stepped interlaced joints (A1 higher t/d ratios, A2 thinner cords/higher step counts).
    • Type B: Include transverse reinforcements (weft) and two categories - B1 (high-elongation warp cords) and B2 (standard elongation). Construction may include steel or textile wefts separated by rubber layers.
    • Type C: (Covered in the standard) additional preferred constructions for specific uses.
  • Jointing guidance: Specifies preferred joint types per ISO 15236-4 - interlaced stepped, plain stepped and finger joints - and explains which belt parameters are critical for each joint type (e.g., equal cord pitch/diameter for stepped joints; similar carcass thickness for finger joints).
  • Calculations & symbols: Includes symbols, units and formulas to calculate cord counts and belt breaking strength to ensure minimum performance and edge width constraints.

Applications and users

  • Applications: Bulk material handling (mining, quarrying, port terminals), long-distance conveyors, heavy-duty surface and underground conveyors. Useful wherever steel-cord belts are specified and vulcanized on-site.
  • Primary users:
    • Conveyor designers and OEMs specifying belt construction
    • Belt manufacturers and compounders
    • Installation and maintenance teams performing vulcanized joints
    • Procurement/specification writers and testing laboratories

  • ISO 15236-4 - Vulcanized belt joints (jointing methods and requirements)

EN ISO 15236-2:2017 helps standardize steel cord conveyor belt types to improve interchangeability, joint performance and long-term reliability - essential for engineers, manufacturers and operators specifying or maintaining steel cord conveyor belts.

ISO 15236-2:2017(E)
Introduction
Steel cord conveyor belts are mainly long belts which are manufactured by joining several delivery
lengths on the site. To achieve joints with a high dynamic capability from belts supplied by various
manufacturers, it is necessary to standardize some features, e.g. thickness of carcass or cord pitch and
cord diameter.
