Overview
EN ISO 10365:2022, titled "Adhesives - Designation of Main Failure Patterns", is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and adopted by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). This document provides a standardized system for identifying and designating the primary failure patterns observed in bonded assemblies during mechanical testing, regardless of the adhesive type or adherend materials.
The standard supersedes the earlier ISO 10365:1992 edition, introducing updates such as the inclusion of stress whitening failure and corrosion-related debonding, enhancing the classification and analysis of adhesive failures.
Key Topics
Failure Pattern Designations: The document defines key failure modes in bonded joints, including:
- Adhesion Failure (AF): Rupture at the adhesive/adherend interface.
- Cohesion Failure (CF): Rupture occurring within the adhesive or adherend.
- Substrate Failure (SF): Failure involving one or both adherends.
- Cohesive Substrate Failure (CSF): Failure within an adherend.
- Delamination Failure (DF): Separation through layers such as coatings or laminates.
- Special Cohesion Failure (SCF) and Failure with Stress Whitening (SWCF): New additions capturing specific mechanical and visual failure characteristics.
- Adhesion and Cohesion Failure with Peel (ACFP): Combined failure modes involving peeling action.
- Corrosion Debonding (COR): Failure due to bondline corrosion.
Mixed and Oscillating Failures: The standard provides guidelines to describe mixed failure modes by assigning approximate percentages to each failure type and introduces notation for oscillating failure patterns (OSC), where failure modes alternate during testing. Such detailed classification allows better interpretation of the mechanical performance of adhesive bonds.
Illustrative Diagrams: EN ISO 10365:2022 includes diagrams to visually represent each failure type, facilitating consistent application and interpretation in laboratories and quality control processes.
Application Scope: Applicable to all mechanical tests on bonded assemblies, independent of the nature of the adhesive or adherends, thus making it a universal reference for adhesive testing.
Applications
EN ISO 10365:2022 serves as a critical tool for industries and professionals involved in:
- Adhesive Testing Laboratories: Enables standardized reporting and classification of failure results, improving test repeatability and data comparison.
- Quality Assurance and Control: Assists manufacturers in diagnosing failure causes in bonded products and refining adhesive processes.
- Research and Development: Provides a framework for analyzing adhesive performance and developing new bonding technologies.
- Composite and Coating Industries: Helps identify failure modes related to coatings, laminates, and corrosion effects on bonded joints.
- Automotive, Aerospace, Electronics, and Construction Sectors: Ensures consistent failure mode designations critical for safety, reliability, and compliance in structural adhesive bonding.
Related Standards
- ISO 472: Plastics – Vocabulary: Provides terminology definitions referenced by EN ISO 10365 for clarity and consistency.
- Other ISO standards related to mechanical testing of adhesives and bonded assemblies, including those specifying test methods and performance criteria.
- Regional and national standards that adopt EN ISO 10365:2022 as part of adhesive testing regulations, ensuring harmonized practices across CEN member countries.
EN ISO 10365:2022 enables professionals working with adhesives to classify and understand failure patterns effectively, supporting accurate analysis, improved product reliability, and standardized communication in adhesive performance assessments. Its universal applicability and detailed failure designations make it an essential reference in adhesive bonding technology worldwide.
