Structural adhesives - Characterization of a surface by measuring adhesion by means of the three point bending method

This European Standard describes a test method to determine ability of a cured adhesive (possibly with a primer) to adhere to a substrate which has had a certain surface finish or with a specific surface preparation by using the "three point bending method".
It is only used for quality assurance and the substrate should be rigid or resistant enough to bending such as steel or aluminium alloys. For other substrates the thickness should be adjusted to the modulus of elasticity or a suitable stiffener should be used.
The adhesive should be polymerisable (curable) without pressure in order to obtain the thickness needed to provide sufficient rigidity, otherwise, a bonded reinforcing piece of the same type and same thickness as the substrate can be substituted for the bloc of adhesive.
It is not suitable for film adhesives.

Overview

EN 1966:2009 - published by CEN - specifies a laboratory test method to characterise a substrate surface by measuring adhesion of a cured structural adhesive using the three point bending method. The standard is intended for quality assurance of adhesive bonding to rigid substrates (e.g., steel, aluminium) and describes specimen preparation, test apparatus, test procedure, data extraction and required test report content.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and limitations
    • Applies to polymerisable (curable) adhesives that set without pressure; not suitable for film adhesives.
    • Intended for rigid substrates or specimens stiffened to equivalent rigidity.
    • Used for surface characterisation and quality control, not general design strength data.
  • Specimen geometry
    • Substrate: typically 50 × 10 × e mm (e depends on material and stiffness).
    • Adhesive block moulded centrally: 25 × 5 × 4 mm (typical nominal dimensions in the standard).
  • Substrates
    • Typical materials: steel (e.g. XC18 or E24) 1 mm and aluminium alloy 2024 1.5 mm. Other materials are permitted if thickness or stiffening is adjusted to modulus of elasticity.
  • Test apparatus and procedure
    • Three point bending fixture with support pins 33 mm apart and a 12 mm central loading rod.
    • Crosshead speed: (0.500 ± 0.001) mm/min.
    • Force measurement accuracy: class A (±1%); displacement resolution 0.001 mm.
  • Data and interpretation
    • Record force/displacement curve; extract slope (P/d), maximum force (Pmax), maximum displacement (dmax), fracture initiation position, propagation mode and area between bonded and unbonded curves.
    • If fracture initiates at the interface, results characterise adhesion; if within the adhesive block, results relate to cohesion.
  • Reporting
    • Test report must include adhesive identity and cure, surface preparation, substrate, conditioning/ageing, machine details, specimen dimensions and failure pattern (per EN ISO 10365).

Applications and users

  • Useful for adhesive manufacturers, bonding process engineers, quality control laboratories and surface treatment specialists to:
    • Evaluate effectiveness of surface preparation or primers.
    • Compare adhesive performance on specific substrate finishes.
    • Monitor production batches and supplier qualification.
  • Not intended as a design load standard; best used in conjunction with joint-specific mechanical tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

EN 1966:2009 is a standard published by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). Its full title is "Structural adhesives - Characterization of a surface by measuring adhesion by means of the three point bending method". This standard covers: This European Standard describes a test method to determine ability of a cured adhesive (possibly with a primer) to adhere to a substrate which has had a certain surface finish or with a specific surface preparation by using the "three point bending method".
