Overview

FprEN 12608-3 is a draft European Standard developed by CEN (European Committee for Standardization) that defines the classification, requirements, and test methods for unplasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC-U) profiles covered with paint. These profiles are specifically intended for use in the fabrication of windows and doors for external applications. The standard applies to profiles coated with paint, varnish, lacquer, or similar coatings, ensuring durability and consistent performance in building envelopes.

This part of EN 12608 complements previous sections by covering painted surfaces, providing clarity for both manufacturers and stakeholders about conformity, performance assessment, and product traceability. The document establishes essential criteria for materials, appearance, weather resistance, mechanical properties, and associated test procedures.

Key Topics

  • Product Scope: Covers only PVC-U profiles with external painted surfaces used in window and door fabrication.
  • Classifications:
    • By wall thickness (following EN 12608-1),
    • Impact resistance,
    • Resistance to artificial weathering for both the base PVC-U material and paint layer.
  • Requirements:
    • Base profiles must meet criteria for material, surface appearance, dimensions, weight, heat reversion, and impact resistance.
    • Paint and painted profile criteria include visual appearance, colour stability, gloss, uniform texture, layer thickness, and adhesion (cross cut resistance).
    • Solar direct reflectance must be evaluated for energy performance, especially for dark-coloured paints.
  • Test Methods:
    • Visual inspection,
    • Colorimetric analysis using standardized techniques (CIE Lab* colour space, CIEDE2000),
    • Weathering tests (EN 513, EN ISO 4892-2),
    • Cross-cut adhesion (EN ISO 2409),
    • Mechanical strength at welded corners and T-joints.

Applications

The standard is relevant in several practical contexts:

  • Window and Door Manufacturing: Ensures that painted PVC-U profiles maintain mechanical integrity and aesthetic qualities when exposed to outdoor conditions, contributing to the overall durability of doors and windows.
  • Building and Construction: Supports compliance in new construction and renovation projects by providing clear benchmarks for performance and quality in exterior joinery products.
  • Product Certification: Facilitates product assessment and certification for suppliers and manufacturers, helping ensure profiles meet the demands of European markets and building codes.
  • Quality Assurance: Enables traceability in production by requiring suitable identification on profiles or packaging, supporting quality systems and regulatory audits.
  • Sustainability and Energy Efficiency: Includes provisions for solar reflectance, allowing for the selection of paint systems that minimize heat gain and support energy-efficient building design.

Related Standards

FprEN 12608-3 works in conjunction with other standards in the EN 12608 series and related references:

  • EN 12608-1: Classification and requirements for non-covered PVC-U profiles.
  • EN 410: Determination of luminous and solar characteristics of glazing.
  • EN 513 & EN ISO 4892-2: Methods for evaluating artificial weather resistance of plastics.
  • EN 514: Testing strength of welded corners and T-joints in profiles.
  • EN ISO 2409: Cross-cut test for coating adhesion.
  • EN ISO/CIE 11664 (Parts 4 & 6): Colour measurement standards, including CIEDE2000.
  • EN 17508: Terminology of PVC-based materials.

By adhering to FprEN 12608-3, manufacturers and suppliers of painted PVC-U profiles for windows and doors can demonstrate compliance with recognized European standards, ensuring reliability, safety, and quality for end-users in the built environment.
