Overview

EN 1545-1:2015 - Identification card systems - Surface transport applications - Part 1 - defines elementary data types, general code lists and general data elements for use in surface transport applications stored on ICs (integrated circuits). Published as a CEN European Standard, this document provides a common vocabulary and data format framework to support interoperable ticketing, fare collection and other transport-related card-based systems across Europe.

This standard is intended to ensure consistent representation of basic data elements (e.g., dates, amounts, identifiers) and associated codelists so that systems from different vendors and operators can exchange and interpret card data reliably. The mechanism for establishing application context and choosing encoding rules is explicitly outside the scope.

Key Topics and Technical Requirements

  • Elementary data types: Standardized definitions for fundamental data structures such as addresses, amounts, dates/time (DateCompact, DateTimeStamp), counters, identifiers (CompanyId, NetworkId), names, quantities, weight and speed.
  • General code lists and data elements: Predefined code sets for interoperable values including country codes, currency, language, device type, event type, gender, location qualifiers and more.
  • ASN.1 conventions: Includes guidance on ASN.1 type naming and structure to promote consistent encoding (the document references ASN.1 naming conventions and existing standards).
  • Size and value constraints: Rules for value ranges and size constraints to ensure deterministic storage on ICs.
  • Practical element examples: Items listed include CapacityUnit, CommercialTransportProductCode, ConditionCode, DayOfValidityCode, ProfileCodeNetwork, ResultCode and RevocationDetailsCode among many others.

Applications and Who Uses It

EN 1545-1:2015 is directly applicable to:

  • Transport operators and authorities implementing interoperable smart-ticketing and fare management systems.
  • Card manufacturers and IC personalization houses that need standardized data formats for cards used in surface transport.
  • System integrators and software vendors building back-office, validator and gate systems that read/write card data.
  • Standards bodies and solution architects designing multi-operator or cross-border ticketing ecosystems.

Practical uses include contact/contactless smart cards for buses, trams, metros and regional rail where consistent data types and codelists reduce integration costs and improve cross-vendor interoperability.

Related Standards

  • Part of the EN 1545 series for identification card systems in transport. It complements other parts that address application context, encoding rules and application-specific profiles.

Keywords: EN 1545-1:2015, identification card systems, surface transport applications, data types, code lists, data elements, ICs, smart cards, ticketing, fare collection.

1. ISO 8824
universal ASN.1 data types This European Standard refers to existing ASN.1 encoding rules (transfer syntaxes), such as the basic and packed encoding rules, for use within surface transport applications. However this European Standard does not exclude the use of other encoding rules. The ASN.1 basic encoding rules (BER) includes significant redundancy in order to make transferred data fully self-defining, which may result in data structures too large to be used in applications on ICs with restricted data storage capacity. Therefore this European Standard allows the use of alternative encoding rules such as the ones based upon the ASN.1 packed encoding rules (PER) (see Clause 9). The mechanism for how to establish the application context, including the decision as to which encoding rules to use, is outside the scope of this European Standard. This European Standard does not pretend to identify and specify every possible ASN.1 type that may be used in future applications by application builders. In addition, local systems may be defined in their own way. This European Standard will be updated and added to over time as new surface transport applications are created, in accordance with the normal CEN practice. SIST EN 1545-1:2015
