Railway applications - Track - Rail - Part 3: Check rails

This European Standard specifies check rail profiles which have been designed for this purpose. It does not cover guard rails which are to protect vehicle, bridge, viaduct and other structures in the event of a derailment.
Three grades of steel and five rail profiles are specified.

Bahnanwendungen - Oberbau - Schienen - Teil 3: Radlenkerschienen

Applications ferroviaires - Voie - Rails - Partie 3: Contre-rails

Železniške naprave - Zgornji ustroj - Tirnice - 3. del: Vodilne tirnice

Ta evropski standard določa profile vodilnih tirnic, ki so bile zasnovane v ta namen. Ne zajema varnostnih tirnic, ki ščitijo vozilo, mostove, viadukte in druge strukture v primeru iztirjenja. Določene so tri vrste jekla in pet profilov tirnic.

Overview

EN 13674-3:2006+A1:2010 - published by CEN - is the European standard that specifies check rail profiles and associated production and acceptance requirements for railway track. It defines five check-rail profiles, three steel grades with Brinell hardness ranges, dimensional data and transition points (Annex A), and mandatory factory production controls. It explicitly excludes guard rails (rails intended to protect structures during derailment).

Keywords: EN 13674-3:2006+A1:2010, check rails, rail profiles, railway track, CEN.

Key Topics and Requirements

  • Profiles and properties: Five standard check-rail profiles are specified (33C1, 36C1, 40C1, 47C1, 48C1) with detailed cross‑sectional dimensions, masses per metre and section properties published in Annex A.
  • Steel grades and hardness: Three steel grades are defined with Brinell hardness at the contact surface: R200 (200–240 HBW), R260 (260–300 HBW) and R320Cr (320–360 HBW). Chemical composition ranges are given.
  • Manufacture and product integrity: Rails must be produced under a factory production control system; compliance with EN ISO 9001 meets the minimum requirement.
  • Identification: Each rail must be marked with manufacturer, heat number, steel grade and profile. Cold stamping is not allowed.
  • Acceptance tests:
    • Chemical composition checks per the standard’s tables.
    • Hydrogen monitoring of liquid steel (on-line immersion probe) with specified sampling rules and heat assessment (grouping by hydrogen ppm).
    • Brinell hardness testing of contact surface (EN ISO 6506-1), one test per heat; surface prepared by removing ≈0.5 mm prior to testing.
  • Dimensional and quality tolerances:
    • Profile tolerances (asymmetric ±1.5 mm; other profile dims ±1.0 mm).
    • Straightness: 1.5 mm over 1.5 m in any plane.
    • Twist check: gaps > 5 mm at rail ends cause rejection.
    • Length tolerance: ±10 mm.
    • Surface imperfections: maximum depth 1 mm; protrusions must be ground away.
  • Transition points: Standard transition geometries between profiles are provided in Annex A (Figures A.6–A.10).

Applications

  • Check rails are used adjacent to running rails in:
    • Switches and crossings, tight-radius curves and other locations where wheel guidance is critical.
    • Situations requiring controlled wheel flange guidance to prevent flange climb.
  • Not intended for structural protection (i.e., not a substitute for guard rails).

Who Uses This Standard

  • Rail manufacturers and steel producers
  • Infrastructure owners and railway operators (procurement and maintenance)
  • Track design and track engineering teams
  • Welding and rail-repair contractors and quality assurance teams
  • Regulatory and conformity assessment bodies implementing EU interoperability requirements

Related Standards

  • EN 13674 series: Part 1 (Vignole rails), Part 2 (switch & crossing rails), Part 4 (light rails)
  • Welding and repair standards referenced (e.g., EN 14587 series, EN 14730 series)
  • EN ISO 6506-1 (Brinell hardness test)

EN 13674-3:2006+A1:2010 ensures consistent design, manufacture and acceptance of check rails to improve safety and interoperability of rail track components across Europe.
