EN 10220:2002
(Main)Seamless and welded steel tubes - Dimensions and masses per unit length
Seamless and welded steel tubes - Dimensions and masses per unit length
This European Standard specifies, for seamless and welded circular steel tubes for general purposes (e. g. mechanical, pressure and structural applications), the following:
- preferred dimensions for outside diameter and wall thickness in millimetres and
- masses per unit length in kilogrammes per metre of plain end tube.
Technical Committees of ECISS and CEN should select these preferred dimensions for their product or functional standards, where appropriate.
The outside diameters are classified into three series reflecting the availability of accessories for piping systems (see Clause 4). This classification of outside diameters into different series and of preferred wall thicknesses indicates the range of steel tubes usually produced.
NOTE Information on dimensions for steel tubes for special applications can be found in other European Standards, e.g. prEN 10255, EN 10305 series, EN ISO 11960 and EN ISO 11961, information on dimensions for stainless steel tubes in EN ISO 1127.
¾ les dimensions préférentielles des diamètres extérieurs et des épaisseurs en millimètres et ;

Overview
EN 10220:2002 is a European standard developed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) that defines the dimensions and masses per unit length for seamless and welded circular steel tubes used in general engineering, mechanical, pressure, and structural applications. This standard specifies preferred outside diameters and wall thicknesses in millimeters, along with their corresponding masses per meter in kilograms. It supports product standardization efforts by providing a consistent reference for steel tube dimensions commonly used across industries in Europe.
The standard serves as a key guideline for manufacturers, engineers, and designers by establishing typical sizes of steel tubes reflecting the availability of accessories and fittings for piping systems, enabling compatibility and interchangeability. It is aligned closely with international standards such as ISO 4200:1991, while also addressing heavy wall tubes not covered by the ISO.
Key Topics
- Steel Tube Types Covered: Seamless and welded circular steel tubes.
- Dimension Specifications:
- Preferred outside diameters classified into three series based on accessory availability.
- Wall thicknesses ranging up to 100 mm.
- Mass Calculation Method: Masses per unit length are calculated using the formula considering outside diameter and wall thickness, rounded for practical use.
- Classification of Outside Diameters:
- Series 1: Diameters with fully standardized system accessories.
- Series 2: Diameters with partially standardized accessories.
- Series 3: Diameters with very limited standardized accessories.
- Application Guidance: Series 1 diameters are recommended for use in piping systems to ensure the availability of standardized fittings.
- Applicability Notes: The standard focuses on general purpose tubes; special applications may refer to complementary standards such as prEN 10255 or the EN 10305 series.
- Density Adjustments: Mass calculations can be adjusted for different steel grades including austenitic, ferritic, and martensitic stainless steels.
Applications
EN 10220:2002 supports a wide range of structural, mechanical, and pressure-related applications involving steel tubes, including but not limited to:
- Construction frameworks and structural supports.
- Piping systems in industrial plants, where compatibility with accessories is critical.
- Mechanical engineering components requiring precise dimensioning.
- Pressure vessels and hydraulic systems where wall thickness directly impacts safety and performance.
- General-purpose steel tube manufacturing for diverse industrial sectors.
By standardizing dimensions and masses, EN 10220 ensures consistent quality and interchangeability across steel tube products, facilitating cross-border trade and engineering design within the European market.
Related Standards
For specialized or complementary requirements, the following standards are relevant alongside EN 10220:
- prEN 10255 – Non-alloy steel tubes suitable for welding or threading.
- EN 10305 series – Technical delivery conditions for steel tubes intended for precision applications.
