Overview

EN ISO 24340:2012 is a European adoption of the international standard ISO 24340:2006, published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and endorsed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). This standard specifies a precise and reliable method for determining the thickness of different layers within resilient floor coverings. It replaces the older EN 429:1993 and provides updated guidelines widely recognized across CEN member countries including Austria, Germany, France, the UK, and others.

Resilient floor coverings, such as vinyl and rubber flooring, typically consist of multiple layers that affect their durability, comfort, and performance. Accurate measurement of these layer thicknesses is critical for quality control, product development, compliance with regulations, and installation specifications.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Purpose
EN ISO 24340:2012 describes an optical measurement method to determine the thickness of layers in resilient floor coverings without destructive testing.

  • Terms and Definitions
Defines a layer as a component with a consistent composition and a specific thickness, excluding any factory-applied finishes.

  • Measurement Principle
Thickness is measured directly using a microscope or video microscope with a minimum magnification of 40× equipped with a micrometric scale or calibrated measuring screen.

  • Required Apparatus

    • Microscope or video microscope with calibrated eyepiece scales
    • Controlled light source for even illumination
    • Cutting tools such as a sharp knife and straightedge for preparing precise specimens
    • Stage holder to secure specimens perpendicularly to the microscope’s optical axis
    • Calibration devices like stage micrometers
  • Sampling and Specimen Preparation
Specifies specimen sizes (typically 10 mm × 25 mm), sampling methods differing for sheet and tile floorings, and instructions for cutting to ensure clean edges and accuracy.

  • Test Conditions
Requires conditioning specimens at standardized atmospheric conditions (23 ± 2) °C and 50% ± 5% relative humidity for at least 24 hours before testing.

  • Measurement Procedure and Calibration
Calibration of the microscope eyepiece scale is mandatory; thickness readings are taken at multiple points at least 10 mm apart and averaged.

  • Reporting Requirements
Test reports must include confirmation of compliance with EN ISO 24340:2012, sample identification, any deviations, and detailed measurement results with minimum, maximum, and mean layer thickness values.

Applications

EN ISO 24340:2012 is essential for stakeholders involved in the manufacture, testing, and quality assurance of resilient floor coverings:

  • Manufacturers use this standard to verify product layer consistency and compliance with technical specifications.
  • Quality laboratories apply the method to conduct reliable and repeatable measurements as part of certification and routine quality control.
  • Material researchers and developers rely on precise layer thickness data to innovate and improve resilient flooring products.
  • Regulatory bodies reference this standard when assessing product safety and performance claims.
  • Flooring installers and specifiers can use thickness data to ensure compatibility with installation requirements and performance expectations.

Related Standards

  • EN 429: Previous European standard for measuring thickness of resilient floor covering layers, superseded by EN ISO 24340:2012.
  • ASTM F410: American standard test method for measuring wear layer thickness of resilient floor coverings by optical methods, similar in purpose.
  • ISO/TC 219 Technical Committee: Governs the scope of standards relating to floor coverings including resilient materials.
  • CEN/TC 134: European technical committee responsible for resilient, textile, and laminate floor coverings standardization.
