Resilient floor coverings - Heterogeneous polyurethane floor coverings - Specification
This European Standard specifies the characteristics of heterogeneous resilient floor coverings based on polyurethane with thermosetting properties supplied in either roll, planks or tile form. This specification does apply for floor covering consisting of a wear layer and other compact layers made from polyurethane which differ in composition, chemical crosslinking and/or design and can contain a decor layer, reinforcement and other backing.
This specification does not apply for floor coverings that are specified in EN ISO 10582, EN ISO 24011, EN 1817 or EN 14565.
To encourage the consumer to make an informed choice, the standard includes a classification system (see EN ISO 10874) based on intensity of use, which shows where these floor coverings should give satisfactory service. It also specifies requirements for marking.
Netekstilne talne obloge - Homogene in heterogene poliuretanske talne obloge - Specifikacija

Overview
EN 16776:2016 is a CEN European Standard for resilient floor coverings - specifically heterogeneous polyurethane (PU) floor coverings with thermosetting properties supplied as rolls, planks or tiles. It defines the characteristics, test methods and marking required to ensure consistent performance for products constructed from a PU wear layer together with one or more compact PU layers (which may include decor layers, reinforcement or backing). The standard excludes products covered by EN ISO 10582, EN ISO 24011, EN 1817 and EN 14565.
Key topics and technical requirements
EN 16776 sets measurable product requirements and prescribes test methods. Important elements include:
- Product forms: roll, plank, tile (dimensions and tolerances per EN ISO 24341 / EN ISO 24342).
- Thickness and mass: overall thickness and layer thickness requirements (EN ISO 24346, EN ISO 24340, EN ISO 23997) with specified tolerances.
- Wear layer: minimum wear layer thickness by class (e.g., 0.10–0.20 mm depending on intended use).
- Residual indentation: maximum 0.10 mm (EN ISO 24343‑1).
- Dimensional stability / curling: limits after heat exposure (EN ISO 23999); curling limits differ for welded and unwelded tiles.
- Flexibility and cracking: mandrel tests (EN ISO 24344).
- Scratch resistance: Annex A specifies a laboratory method using a WC–Co pin and soil rubbing; the load that produces the first uninterrupted visible scratch is recorded (used in the classification table).
- Furniture leg and castor chair resistance: Type-specified furniture leg tests (ISO 16581 / EN 424) and castor chair performance after 25 000 cycles (EN 425).
- Colour fastness: to artificial light (EN ISO 105‑B02 / ASTM F1515).
- Marking: mandatory marking of the product/packaging including EN 16776:2016, manufacturer identification, product name, color/batch, applicable classes (EN ISO 10874), and size/area information.
Applications and who uses it
EN 16776 is used by:
- Manufacturers and R&D teams for product specification, quality control and conformity assessment of heterogeneous PU floorings.
- Test laboratories to perform standardized performance tests (scratch resistance, indentation, dimensional stability, etc.).
- Architects, specifiers and contractors when selecting floor coverings suited to expected traffic and environment (domestic, commercial, light industrial).
- Procurement professionals and distributors ensuring products meet declared classes and marking requirements.
- Regulatory bodies and certification schemes that reference European standards.
Practical use: selecting the correct PU flooring for intended intensity of use (via EN ISO 10874 classification), ensuring durability against furniture movement and castors, and validating wear and aesthetic performance.
