Overview

EN 1817:2020 is a European standard developed by CEN that specifies the requirements for homogeneous and heterogeneous smooth rubber floor coverings, including grained or embossed types. Applicable to floor coverings supplied in either tile or roll form, this standard ensures consistent quality, durability, and performance across resilient rubber flooring products. It supersedes EN 1817:2010 and provides updated references and classification criteria aligned with EN ISO 10874, supporting effective use in residential, commercial, and light industrial environments.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Definitions: Covers smooth rubber floor coverings made from natural or synthetic rubber, with homogeneous products having a uniform composition throughout, and heterogeneous products consisting of a wear layer plus various backing layers.
  • Performance Requirements: Specifies general requirements such as thickness, dimensional stability, flexibility, hardness (minimum 75 Shore A), residual indentation, abrasion resistance, and color fastness to artificial light, ensuring long-lasting resilient flooring solutions.
  • Classification System: Introduces use-based classification aligned with EN ISO 10874, categorizing floor coverings by intensity of use for domestic (moderate to heavy), commercial, and light industrial settings. This classification guides selection for appropriate service conditions.
  • Marking Requirements: Defines essential product and packaging labeling details including reference to EN 1817:2020, manufacturer identification, product name, color/pattern, batch or roll number, classification symbol, and dimensions or covered area.
  • Optional Properties: Highlights additional features that may be important depending on application, such as electrical resistance (EN 1081), electrostatic propensity (EN 1815), stain resistance (EN ISO 26987), furniture leg movement resistance (EN ISO 16581), and cigarette resistance (EN 1399).

Applications

EN 1817:2020 supports the specification and selection of resilient rubber floor coverings ideal for:

  • Residential Flooring: Domestic class coverings suitable for moderate to heavy foot traffic areas in homes, offering durability, ease of maintenance, and aesthetic variety.
  • Commercial Environments: Products classified for general to very heavy commercial use are suitable for office buildings, retail stores, healthcare facilities, and educational institutions, where performance and safety are critical.
  • Light Industrial Use: Specialized classifications address the demands of light industrial settings, requiring resilient flooring that can tolerate mechanical stresses and protect against wear while maintaining stability and appearance.
  • Safety-Conscious Spaces: Optional properties like electrostatic discharge control and cigarette resistance extend the standard’s applicability to environments with specific safety or hygiene requirements.

Related Standards

  • EN ISO 10874: Classification of resilient, textile, and laminate floor coverings by use and durability, referenced for defining intensity of use classes.
  • EN ISO 24346, 24341, 24342: Test methods for determining thickness, length, width, and dimensional stability of floor coverings.
  • EN 425: Castor chair test method, relevant for verifying suitability in furniture environments.
  • EN ISO 105-B02: Assessing color fastness to artificial light to ensure color durability under exposure.
  • EN 1081: Test for electrical resistance, important for installations requiring static control.
  • EN 1815 and EN ISO 16581: Evaluation of electrostatic propensity and resistance to simulated furniture leg movement, respectively, important for safety and durability.
  • EN 1399: Testing resistance to stubbed and burning cigarettes, supporting fire safety in floor coverings.

EN 1817:2020 provides a comprehensive framework for manufacturers, specifiers, architects, and end-users to ensure resilient smooth rubber floor coverings meet stringent performance criteria, classifications, and marking standards necessary for a wide range of functional and aesthetic flooring applications. This facilitates better decision-making and compliance with European standards, enhancing the longevity and safety of rubber flooring installations.
