Overview
EN 1816:2020 is the CEN European standard specifying performance and marking requirements for homogeneous and heterogeneous smooth rubber floor coverings with foam backing, supplied as rolls or tiles. It defines the essential characteristics, a classification system based on intensity of use (see EN ISO 10874), and mandatory marking information to help manufacturers, specifiers and buyers ensure fitness for purpose.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Product types covered: homogeneous (single-composition through thickness) and heterogeneous (wear layer + different backing layers) smooth rubber floor coverings, including grained or embossed surfaces, with foam backing.
- Dimensional and thickness controls: requirements for roll length/width and tile side tolerances (EN ISO 24341 / EN ISO 24342) and limits on dimensional stability (EN ISO 23999).
- Mechanical and physical properties:
- Hardness of wear layer: ≥ 75 Shore A (ISO 48-4).
- Residual indentation (static load): average ≤ 0.25 mm (EN ISO 24343-1).
- Peel resistance: average ≤ 50 N/50 mm or rupture in the foam (EN ISO 24345).
- Abrasion resistance (wear layer): ≤ 250 mm (ISO 4649:2017, Method A).
- Flexibility: no cracking on 20 mm mandrel (EN ISO 24344).
- Colour fastness to artificial light: minimum rating 6 on blue wool scale and ≥ 3 on grey scale (EN ISO 105‑B02).
- Classification by intensity of use (Table 2): links product thickness and wear-layer minimums to use classes (domestic and commercial) as referenced in EN ISO 10874 (e.g., classes 21–33, 31–33).
- Marking requirements: all products/packaging must show reference to EN 1816:2020, manufacturer ID, product name, colour/pattern and batch/roll number, class (EN ISO 10874), tile dimensions or roll covered area.
Practical applications and users
EN 1816:2020 is used to:
- Guide manufacturers in designing and quality-controlling rubber floor coverings with foam backing.
- Help architects, interior designers, specifiers, and procurement teams select appropriate floor coverings for residential and commercial spaces by using the intensity-of-use classification.
- Support test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies in applying the referenced test methods.
- Assist installers and facility managers to verify product marking and suitability for intended traffic and performance expectations.
Typical applications include domestic rooms, healthcare, education, retail and light-to-medium commercial environments where cushioned rubber flooring is desired.
