Overview

EN ISO 7010:2020/A1:2020 is a CEN-adopted amendment to the EN ISO 7010 series (based on ISO 7010:2019/Amd 1:2020) that updates the catalogue of registered graphical safety signs. This amendment (approved October 2020) adds six safety signs to the official registry and clarifies implementation notes such as colour matching and comprehension testing. The full set of signs is available on the ISO Online Browsing Platform.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Registered safety signs added:
    • P045 No campfire (flame above four logs)
    • P071 Do not cross barrier (human figure, vertical lines between horizontals)
    • P072 No jumping down (jumping human figure, block)
    • W068 Warning - Falling into water when stepping on/off floating surface (human figure, wavy lines)
    • W069 Warning - Jellyfish (jellyfish symbol, wavy line)
    • W070 Warning - Step down (human figure, down-step)
  • Symbol content and metadata: Each registered sign entry includes a reference number, referent, function, image content, associated hazard, intended human behaviour and additional information.
  • Colour guidance: Electronic colour reproduction is not reliable; for accurate colour matching use ISO 3864-4, which specifies colourimetric and photometric properties.
  • Comprehension testing: For the newly added signs, ISO 9186‑1 test data are not available; therefore a supplementary text sign is recommended to increase comprehension unless the sign is supported by manuals, instructions or training.
  • Legal/administrative notes: The amendment is adopted without modification by CEN members and national standards bodies are required to implement it by specified deadlines; patent-rights and copyright notices apply.

Applications and users

Practical uses and benefits:

  • Ensures consistent, internationally registered safety signage across workplaces, public spaces, parks, ports, marinas and transportation hubs.
  • Helps designers, safety managers and sign manufacturers implement standardized pictograms for prohibition and warning messages (e.g., fire risk, water hazards, restricted access).
  • Supports compliance efforts by regulators, facility operators, municipalities and health & safety professionals seeking harmonized visual communication.

Who should consult this standard:

  • Safety/HS managers, facility/operations managers, signage manufacturers, graphic designers for safety graphics, regulators and municipal planners.

Related standards

  • ISO 7010 (main catalogue of registered safety signs)
  • ISO 3864‑4 (colour specification and colour matching for safety signs)
  • ISO 9186‑1 (testing the comprehensibility of graphical symbols)

Using EN ISO 7010:2020/A1:2020 helps organizations adopt up-to-date, tested pictograms and follow international practice for clear, consistent safety communication.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1.
