The EN 12098-5:2017 standard is a comprehensive framework that outlines the requirements for scheduling equipment used in heating systems. Its primary focus is on start-stop scheduling functions, which are crucial for optimizing the energy performance of buildings. By establishing minimum acceptable standards for functions, performance, and documentation, this standard ensures that heating controls are efficient and effective. One of the key strengths of this standard is its versatility, as it accommodates both analogue and digital processing techniques for scheduling signals. This dual approach allows for greater flexibility in implementation, catering to various types of heating systems and configurations, and aligning with contemporary technological advancements in the field of building energy management. Furthermore, the standard clearly delineates its scope, specifying that it applies to scheduling equipment while noting the exclusion of certain aspects such as safety requirements for heating systems and the dynamic behavior of valves. This clarity helps manufacturers and installers understand which aspects of heating control are addressed, allowing them to focus their efforts efficiently. The connection to a data network is also an important aspect, as it opens up possibilities for integrating modern smart technologies into heating systems. This relevance is particularly significant in the context of energy efficiency mandates across Europe, positioning EN 12098-5:2017 as an essential standard for transitioning to smarter, more sustainable building management solutions. Additionally, the document effectively situates this standard within the broader context of energy performance of buildings (EPB) standards, referencing the modular structure outlined in prEN ISO 52000-1. This reference aids users in navigating related standards, enhancing the user's ability to integrate multiple components of building performance into a cohesive management strategy. In summary, the EN 12098-5:2017 standard is a vital resource in the field of energy performance, offering clear guidance on the controls for heating systems. Its emphasis on scheduling functions, adaptability to technology, and clarity of scope make it a relevant standard in today's efforts to improve energy efficiency in buildings.
