EN 10253-1:2026 is a CEN European Standard for butt-welding pipe fittings made of wrought carbon steel for general use and without specific inspection requirements. It specifies the delivery requirements for seamless and welded elbows, reducers, tees and caps, including material, dimensions, inspection, marking, and packaging. It is meant for manufacturers, purchasers, and quality teams that need a common basis for ordering, testing, and accepting these fittings.

What does EN 10253-1:2026 specify?

EN 10253-1:2026 specifies technical delivery requirements for seamless and welded butt-welding fittings made of wrought carbon steel without specific inspection requirements. The introduction also states that these fittings are not intended for applications covered by the European Legislation for Pressure Equipment.

The document is organized into Clauses 1 to 16 and normative Annex A.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex ADimensions for elbows, tees, reducers and caps

The main clauses cover scope, normative references, terms and symbols, grade classification and designation, ordering information, pressure responsibility, manufacturing, technical requirements, appearance, dimensions and tolerances, inspection, sampling, test methods, marking, and protection and packaging.

What are the key requirements of EN 10253-1:2026?

EN 10253-1:2026 combines material requirements, manufacturing controls, dimensional limits, and delivery documentation. In practice, it gives both the producer and the buyer the basis for what may be supplied and how it is checked.

Product scope, grades, and ordering

Clause 1 limits the standard to elbows, concentric and eccentric reducers, equal and reducing tees, and caps made from wrought carbon steel. Clause 5 classifies the grades as non-alloy quality steels and uses the designations S235 and S265 together with the document number.

Clause 6 says the order must state the quantity, the reference to the standard, the fitting designation, the steel grade, and any options. The designation rules matter because elbows, reducers, tees, and caps are identified differently, so the order has to show the right dimensions and form.

Pressure responsibility

Clause 7 places the responsibility for allowable pressure and temperature on the user, who must define them according to the state of the art and the applicable design codes or standards. In practice, EN 10253-1:2026 is not a pressure-rating document, so the fitting must be selected and applied within the user's own design basis.

Manufacturing, welding, and heat treatment

Clause 8 gives the manufacturer discretion over the steelmaking process, but the steel must be fully killed. It also allows different starting product forms and production routes, while requiring the manufacturing method to be reported.

If welded tubes are used as starting material, the full length of the tube weld seam must be non-destructively tested in the tube condition, and helical welded tubes are not permitted. Clause 8.2.2 also requires any weld made during fitting manufacture to be a fusion weld with full penetration, with welding procedures and personnel qualified to EN ISO 15607 or EN ISO 9606-1.

Clause 8.2.3 requires fittings made by cold deformation to be normalized. Hot-deformed fittings may be supplied without heat treatment if the final forming operation is carried out between 750 °C and 980 °C and the resulting structure and mechanical properties are equivalent.

Chemical, mechanical, and surface requirements

Clause 9 sets the material acceptance rules. The chemical composition is based on cast analysis, and the listed limits apply to S235 and S265. Clause 9 also sets tensile properties, elongation, and hardness values for the finished product.

Clause 10 defines acceptable surface condition. The fittings must be free from defects visible by visual testing, and any dressing must preserve the minimum wall thickness. Surface marks and scale are allowed only within the stated limits, so buyers and inspectors need to distinguish acceptable surface finish from rejectable damage.

Dimensions, tolerances, inspection, and marking

Clause 11 and Annex A define the product geometry, preferred diameter and wall thickness series, and dimensional tolerances. The standard uses tolerances for diameter, out-of-roundness, wall thickness, specific fitting dimensions, form, and end bevelling. For elbows, conformity is verified by the measurable dimensions because the bend radius itself cannot be measured directly in practice.

Clauses 12 to 14 set the inspection system. Deliveries are made with non-specific inspection, and a test report 2.2 is required. The document links cast analysis, tensile or hardness testing, dimensional checks, visual testing, and weld NDT to the product size and manufacturing route.

Clause 15 covers marking, including the manufacturer’s mark, country of manufacture or ISO code, steel grade, fitting type, and dimensions. Clause 16 states that normal supply is without protective coating or end plugs unless special packaging is agreed.

What terms does EN 10253-1:2026 define?

  • Model - The designation used for elbows, return bends, and reducers; for elbows and return bends it identifies the bending diameter, and for reducers it identifies the form.
  • Weld during manufacture - A weld made to produce the fitting itself, not the weld seam of a starting tube.
  • Seamless fitting - A fitting made without welding from unwelded starting material.
  • Welded fitting - A fitting made from welded starting material or by a process where welding is part of manufacture.
  • ReH - Upper yield strength, used as one of the mechanical properties for the finished fitting.
  • Rm - Tensile strength, used to verify the base material at room temperature.
  • Rp0,2 - Minimum 0.2 % proof strength, used when a clear yield point is not present.

Who uses EN 10253-1:2026?

Manufacturers use EN 10253-1:2026 to choose starting material, qualify welding, apply heat treatment, test products, and mark deliveries. Purchasers and buyers use it to define what to order and what documents and tests to request.

Quality managers, inspectors, and laboratories use it for sampling, visual checks, dimensional checks, tensile testing, hardness testing, and weld NDT. Welders, welding coordinators, and NDT personnel use it because the standard points to qualification and competence requirements for welding and inspection. It is relevant in general pipework and metal fitting supply chains where wrought carbon steel butt-welding fittings are needed.

What changed in EN 10253-1:2026 from the previous edition?

EN 10253-1:2026 supersedes EN 10253-1:1999. The foreword lists these significant changes: the clauses were restructured to match the layout of EN 10253-2 and EN 10253-4; the introduction, scope, normative references, terms, symbols and abbreviations, options, technical requirements, dimensions, and figures were revised; dished ends were removed; steel grade S265 was moved from Annex A into Clause 9; and the dimensions were moved to Annex A. The standard was also editorially revised.

Introduction
In writing this document the competent committee recognized that there are two broad types of products
commonly used, and decided to reflect these in the standard by differentiating between two parts.
EN 10253-1 describes fittings without formal reference to the pressure resistance, which are not
intended to be used in applications, covered by the European Legislation for Pressure Equipment.
EN 10253-2 defines fittings that are intended to be used in applications covered by the European
Legislation for Pressure Equipment.
The selection of steel type and requirement level depend on many factors; the properties of the fluid to
be conveyed, the service conditions, the design code and any statutory requirements should all be taken
into consideration. Therefore this document gives no detailed guidelines for the application of different
parts. It is the ultimate responsibility of the user to select the appropriate part for the intended
application.
