General Information
Overview
EN 18007-2:2024 - Electromagnetic pulse welding (EPW) - Part 2: Design of welded joints (CEN) specifies the design requirements and practical guidelines for creating reliable electromagnetic pulse welds. It is part of the EN 18007 series and complements operator qualification, procedure qualification and inspection standards to ensure repeatable, safe and fit‑for‑purpose EPW joints.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and purpose: Defines design requirements that support the intended end use (e.g., leak‑tightness, strength, safety‑critical attributes) and identifies essential process controls to demonstrate compliance with the qualified welding procedure.
- Documentation: Drawings and specifications must record essential weld information and special requirements (fracture-, durability-, mission- or safety‑critical). Weld symbols follow EN ISO 2553.
- Joint design: Joint design must consider material properties. Currently, lap joints are the practical joint form for EPW; butt joints are not possible at present. The standard separates guidance for:
- Sheet metal parts (flat lap joints)
- Cylindrical parts (tubular or concentric lap joints)
- Essential geometric variables: WPS and drawings shall specify variables such as:
- thickness of target and flyer sheets/parts
- width of flyer (sheet) or outer diameters (cylindrical)
- initial gap between flyer and target
- overlap lengths (flyer/target and flyer/coil)
- free length between flyer and support (if applicable)
- Additional design information: Requires specification of parent and flyer material (alloy, temper, product form), pre‑weld surface condition and coatings, final weld contour/finishing, post‑weld processing, and surface roughness.
- Qualification and inspection: All production EPW shall be performed by operators qualified per EN 18007-3 and in accordance with a WPS qualified per EN 18007-4. Inspection, test methods and acceptance criteria are specified in EN 18007-5.
Applications and users
EN 18007-2:2024 is intended for:
- Design engineers and welding engineers developing EPW joints
- Production planners and process engineers creating or validating WPS documents
- Quality managers and inspectors defining inspection plans and acceptance criteria
- Manufacturers implementing EPW in assembly processes who need standardized joint design rules
Use of this standard helps ensure welded assemblies meet functional and safety requirements, reduce production defects, and streamline procedure qualification and inspection.
