Overview
EN 13286-42:2003 is a CEN test standard for determining the indirect tensile strength (ITS) of hydraulically bound mixtures (HBM). It specifies a laboratory method for cylindrical specimens (laboratory-made or cored from production material) with a maximum aggregate size of 31.5 mm. The procedure measures the tensile capacity of HBM used in road base, sub‑base and capping layers by applying compressive loads along opposite generatrices until failure.
Key topics and technical requirements
Scope and specimens
- Applies to cylindrical specimens manufactured in the lab or cored from production mixes.
- Slenderness ratio (length/diameter) required between 0.8 and 2.0.
- Dimensions measured to ±0.5%; mass to ±0.25%.
- Mass loss during curing greater than 2% must be recorded and may invalidate results.
Apparatus and accessories
- Compression testing machine with load indication accurate enough to determine ultimate load to ±1%.
- Loading platens flatness tolerance < 3% and alignment provisions (visual alignment not acceptable).
- Single-use packing/bearing strips (plywood or hardboard) with thickness (4 ± 1) mm, width ≥ 0.1·D and length ≥ specimen length H.
Test procedure
- Specimens positioned centrally with an alignment accuracy better than 1 mm.
- Apply load continuously and uniformly (no shock) with a stress increase ≤ 0.2 MPa/s.
- Parallelism of the loaded generatrices not to exceed 1 mm per 100 mm; non‑conforming specimens discarded.
Result calculation and reporting
- ITS is calculated from the failure force F and specimen geometry (length H, diameter D) using the formula given in the standard and reported to the nearest 0.01 N/mm² (0.01 MPa).
- Test report must reference EN 13286-42 and include specimen ID, dimensions, compaction and curing method, mass changes, age at test, ITS result and any non‑compliances.
Applications and users
- Who uses it: pavement engineers, construction material laboratories, contractors, quality control teams, researchers, and public authorities specifying HBM performance.
- Practical uses: quality control of hydraulically bound base/sub-base layers, comparative assessment of mixes, design verification, research on binder formulations and long‑term performance prediction.
