FprEN ISO 19014-3 is a CEN standard in the ISO 19014 series for earth-moving machinery functional safety. It specifies minimum environmental testing requirements for electronic and electrical components identified as safety-related parts of the control system (SRP/CS) used on earth-moving machinery (EMM) and their attachments. It is intended for machine manufacturers, component suppliers, and test laboratories that need to check whether these parts are fit for the intended operating environment.

What does FprEN ISO 19014-3 specify?

FprEN ISO 19014-3 covers environmental testing for electronic and electrical components used as SRP/CS on EMM defined in ISO 6165 and on their attachments. The document is organized into scope, normative references, terms and definitions, information for use, functional status classifications, tests and requirements, and an informative annex with a test checklist.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex ATest checklist for documenting which tests were performed and the rationale for excluding any test

What are the key requirements of FprEN ISO 19014-3?

FprEN ISO 19014-3 sets minimum test conditions, but the EMM manufacturer is responsible for matching them to the actual machine environment. That matters because mounting location, such as the engine compartment, operator station or chassis, changes the stresses the component will see.

  • Clause 4 requires limits of machine use, notable assumptions, and examples of abuse to be stated in the information for use. In practice, this means the test plan and user documentation have to explain the conditions the component was qualified for.
  • Clause 5 defines functional status classes A to E. Class A means the DUT works as designed during and after the test; Class B allows temporary deviation during the test; Class C allows temporary malfunction with automatic recovery; Class D requires reset; Class E requires repair or replacement.
  • Clause 6.1 requires the manufacturer to consider diurnal and seasonal variation and to document any exclusion from testing. Documentary evidence can justify omitting tests for components shown to be immune to a contaminant.
  • Clauses 6.2 to 6.5 cover dust, chemical resistance, salt spray, and pressure wash. The document ties these to ingress protection and corrosion resistance, so the reader knows when sealing, materials, or coatings are sufficient and when a test is needed.
  • Clauses 6.6 and 6.7 cover random vibration and operating shock. Random vibration uses an accelerated exposure based on the mounting location, and operating shock requires the DUT to be powered and monitored.
  • Clauses 6.8 to 6.10 cover temperature cycles, thermal shock, and humidity cycles. These tests check whether the DUT stays functional through changing climate conditions, moisture, and thermal expansion.
  • Clauses 6.11 to 6.14 cover overvoltage, undervoltage, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), and reverse polarity. These are the electrical robustness checks for jump-start events, voltage drops, electromagnetic disturbance, and incorrect polarity.

What terms does FprEN ISO 19014-3 define?

  • Earth-moving machinery (EMM) - the machine family covered by the standard, as identified in ISO 6165.
  • Safety-related parts of the control system (SRP/CS) - control-system parts whose correct behavior is needed for safety.
  • Device under test (DUT) - the component being evaluated in the test.
  • Life cycle - the time between commissioning and decommissioning of a component.
  • Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) - the ability to function without unacceptable electromagnetic interference, and without causing it.
  • Functional status classifications - the A to E classes used to judge whether the DUT stays within, returns to, or falls outside the required behavior.

Who uses FprEN ISO 19014-3?

FprEN ISO 19014-3 is used by earth-moving machinery manufacturers, component manufacturers, test laboratories, and health and safety bodies. In practice, they use it to specify test programs, qualify controllers, joysticks, displays, switches, solenoids, and similar parts, and document why particular tests were or were not run. Service providers and machine users may also rely on it when assessing replacement parts or field failures.

What changed in FprEN ISO 19014-3 from the previous edition?

FprEN ISO 19014-3 is the first edition of ISO 19014-3 and, together with ISO 19014-1, ISO 19014-2, ISO 19014-4 and ISO/TS 19014-5, replaces ISO 15998. The foreword lists these changes: dated references, added information for use, an added functional status Class E, correction of “IPXK6” to “IPX6K”, and minor editorial improvements.

Which standards are used with FprEN ISO 19014-3?

  • ISO 6165 - identifies EMM types and provides basic terms and definitions.
  • ISO 19014-1 - gives the risk assessment methodology used to determine control system performance requirements.
  • ISO 19014-2 - is referenced for information for use.
  • ISO 13766-1 and ISO 13766-2 - provide the EMC requirements used for functional safety.
  • ISO 16750-2 and ISO 16750-5 - provide test methods for electrical loads and chemical loads.
  • ISO 20653 and IEC 60529 - provide the IP code basis used for dust and pressure-wash protection.
  • IEC 60068-2-11, IEC 60068-2-52, IEC 60068-2-14, IEC 60068-2-27, IEC 60068-2-38, and IEC 60068-2-64 - provide the environmental test methods used for salt mist, temperature change, shock, humidity cycling, and vibration.

What does the FprEN ISO 19014-3 document contain?

FprEN ISO 19014-3 gives clause-by-clause purpose and test method subsections for dust, chemical resistance, salt spray, pressure wash, random vibration, operating shock, temperature cycles, thermal shock, humidity cycles, overvoltage, undervoltage, EMC, and reverse polarity. It includes Figure 1 and Table 1 for the random vibration acceleration spectral density, and Figure 2 for the temperature cycle. Annex A provides a test checklist for documenting conducted and excluded tests, which supports design qualification and test reporting.

Introduction
This document addresses electronic and electrical systems used for functional safety in earth-moving
machinery.
The structure of safety standards in the field of machinery is as follows.
Type-A standards (basis standards) give basic concepts, principles for design and general aspects that can
be applied to machinery.
Type-B standards (generic safety standards) deal with one or more safety aspects, or one or more types of
safeguards that can be used across a wide range of machinery:
— type-B1 standards on particular safety aspects (e.g. safety distances, surface temperature, noise);
— type-B2 standards on safeguards (e.g. two-hands controls, interlocking devices, pressure sensitive
devices, guards).
Type-C standards (machinery safety standards) deal with detailed safety requirements for a particular
machine or group of machines.
This document, when taken together with the other parts of ISO 19014, is a type-C standard as stated in
ISO 12100.
