Overview
EN 12100:2025 - Plastics piping systems - Polyethylene (PE) valves - Test method for resistance to bending between supports defines a standardized laboratory test to assess how a valve assembly (valve body plus two pipe ends) withstands bending loads while pressurized. The method is intended for valves with a PE body for pipes with a nominal outside diameter > 63 mm up to and including 400 mm used for the transport of fluids. Where referenced by product standards, the procedure may also be applied to valves made of materials other than PE.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test principle: apply a constant bending load to a valve assembly supported at two points (three‑point bending arrangement) while the valve is under internal air pressure; monitor leaktightness and operating torque before, during and after loading.
- Test specimen: complete valve assembled with two pipe sections of the same material, diameter, SDR and MRS as the valve; conditioned at (23 ± 2) °C for at least 24 h.
- Arrangement: supports with 5 mm radius, spaced at 10 × nominal diameter (10 d); bending force applied at spigot ends as close as possible to the valve body.
- Apparatus & accuracy:
- Static uniaxial testing machine conforming to EN ISO 7500-1; force maintained within ±2 %.
- Torque measuring device accurate to ±5 % (EN ISO 8233 referenced).
- Pressure gauge conforming to EN 837-1; compressed air supply 0–500 mbar (typical product standards: 500 mbar for water valves, 25 mbar for gas valves).
- Procedure:
- Two cycles: first with the obturator half‑open, then closed.
- Apply specified bending force at 25 mm/min ±10 % and hold for at least 5 hours.
- Check tightness (per ISO 9393-1) and measure operating torque before, during and after loading.
- Rotate and repeat the bend in perpendicular direction; allow counter‑bend if needed.
- Reporting: includes identification, material, nominal size, assembly method, applied force, tightness results, torque values, conditioning and ambient conditions, and anomalies.
Applications and users
EN 12100:2025 is used for product verification, quality control and type‑testing by:
- Valve and plastics piping manufacturers (design validation, production control).
- Independent test laboratories and certification bodies (type approval, compliance tests).
- Pipeline engineers and specifiers for water, gas and other fluid transport systems.
- R&D teams assessing mechanical durability of PE valves under combined bending and internal pressure.
