Thermal insulating materials for building applications - Determination of organic content

This European Standard specifies the equipment and procedures for determining the organic content of thermal insulating materials.
The method is aimed at determining the organic content for products which are inorganic, i.e. products containing a low percentage of organic compounds, either unfaced products or the insulating material of a faced product.
NOTE 1   It can be used to verify that a thermal insulating product complies with the requirements in prEN 13501-1 Fire classification of construction products and building elements - Part 1: Classification using test data from reaction to fire test to be in Euroclass A1 without testing.
NOTE 2   The standard is not intended for the determination of organic content in the presence of water of hydration and/or combined carbonate, sulphate etc.
NOTE 3   The standard is not intended for the determination of organic content of adhesives, facings and/or coatings.

Overview

EN 13820:2003 (CEN) specifies a reference test method for the determination of organic content in thermal insulating materials for building applications. The method is intended for predominantly inorganic insulating products (low organic fraction) - either unfaced products or the insulating core of faced products - and defines equipment, specimen preparation, test procedure and result reporting. The standard supports fire-classification workflows (see prEN 13501-1) and is prepared by CEN/TC 88.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Principle: organic content is measured as mass loss after controlled heating (loss-on-ignition) of a previously dried specimen.
  • Apparatus:
    • Balance with resolution 0.001 g
    • Temperature-controlled ventilated oven (105 ± 5 °C)
    • Temperature-controlled ventilated furnace (500 ± 20 °C)
    • Inert test specimen containers (preheated at 500 °C)
    • Desiccator for cooling
  • Test specimens:
    • Use original product thickness; remove facings/coatings/adhesives before sampling
    • At least 8 pieces per specimen (taken across the product); specimen mass 10–200 g
    • Number of specimens: as per relevant product standard or at least five
  • Conditioning: dry in oven at 105 ± 5 °C until constant mass (change < 0.05 % between consecutive weighings spaced ≥ 1 h)
  • Procedure:
    • Weigh empty container (m1), dried specimen + container (m2)
    • Heat in furnace (typically 500 ± 20 °C) until organics are burned off (normally ≥ 2 h), cool in desiccator and weigh (m3)
    • Repeat heating/cooling cycles until constant mass is achieved
  • Calculation: organic content Moc (mass %) = 100 × (m2 − m3) / (m2 − m1) - results rounded to 0.01 %
  • Limitations: not applicable where water of hydration or combined carbonates/sulphates are present; not intended for adhesives, facings or coatings
  • Annex A: gives an example simplified method for factory production control (continuous weighing, no prior conditioning; result rounded to 0.1 %)

Applications and users

  • Verifying organic content of thermal insulating materials in laboratories, product certification bodies, manufacturers and quality-control labs
  • Supporting compliance checks for reaction-to-fire classification (prEN 13501-1) - e.g., to confirm suitability for Euroclass A1 without fire testing
  • Useful for product standards, production control, material specification and regulatory compliance in building materials manufacturing and testing

Related standards and context

  • prEN 13501-1 (Fire classification using reaction-to-fire test data) - EN 13820 can help verify eligibility for Euroclass A1
  • Prepared by CEN/TC 88; intended to be used alongside product-specific European standards and technical specifications
