Overview

EN 1929-2:2004 - "Basket trolleys - Part 2: Requirements, tests and inspection for basket trolleys with or without a child carrying facility, intended to be used on passenger conveyors" is a CEN European standard that defines safety, construction, performance, testing and inspection requirements for self‑service basket trolleys intended to be used on passenger conveyors (escalator-type moving walkways). It complements EN 1929-1 and links to escalator safety requirements in EN 115.

Key topics and technical requirements

This part of EN 1929 specifies practical, testable requirements for safe use of basket trolleys on passenger conveyors:

  • Maximum total loading mass: 160 kg when used on passenger conveyors.
  • Wheel size: wheel diameter shall not be less than 120 mm.
  • Conveyor width compatibility: passenger conveyor nominal width must be at least 400 mm greater than the overall trolley width.
  • Maintaining device: trolleys must have a device that keeps them stopped on the conveyor when unattended.
  • Stability tests:
    • Longitudinal stability: trolley must not overturn to an angle of up to 16° (ascending/descending).
    • Lateral stability: trolley must not overturn to an angle of up to 10° sideways.
  • Exit/topple test: trolley must not topple when passing the comb at the conveyor exit (see specific test 7.3).
  • Test for maintaining on conveyor: evaluated on a 12° slope using aluminium support strips with surface roughness 0.4 µm < Ra < 1.6 µm. Load to manufacturer’s maximum and hold for at least 3 minutes.
  • Passenger conveyor interface parameters: compatible conveyors typically have max speed 0.5 m/s; comb geometry limits include comb tooth slant β ≤ 15°, height H ≤ 55 mm, and transition length L ≥ 500 mm.
  • Signage and marking: visible pictogram at entrance (minimum 80×80 mm) and on handle (≥ 20×20 mm), clear instruction "Hold the handle continuously", maximum basket load and trolley identification plate (manufacturer, model, volume, max load, manufacture date, EN reference).
  • Inspections & maintenance: delivery checks, repeated acceptance after major modifications, and periodic inspections at least every six months; maintain a register of technical characteristics, inspections, modifications and accidents.

Applications and users

EN 1929-2:2004 is used to ensure safe integration of basket trolleys with passenger conveyors in:

  • Supermarkets, retail chains and DIY stores using moving walkways or short escalator links
  • Trolley manufacturers and designers specifying conveyor‑compatible trolleys
  • Facility managers, safety officers and maintenance teams responsible for conveyor/trolley interface and periodic inspections
  • Escalator/passenger conveyor installers and maintenance contractors verifying safe trolley use on-site

  • EN 115 - Safety rules for construction and installation of escalators and passenger conveyors

  • Other parts in the EN 1929 series (prEN 1929-3 to prEN 1929-7) cover trolleys with additional goods carrying facilities and baby/child carrying features.

This standard is essential for compliance-driven product design, safe operation, and risk reduction where basket trolleys interact with passenger conveyors.
