Overview

EN 1929-3:2005 is a CEN (European) standard that specifies construction, performance, testing and safety requirements for manually driven basket trolleys that include at least one additional goods carrying facility (e.g., trays, racks), with or without a child carrying facility. It applies to general-purpose self-service shopping trolleys not intended for use on passenger conveyors.

This part is one in the EN 1929 series for retail trolleys and complements EN 1929-1:1998 by adding specific requirements for trolleys with extra goods carrying facilities.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope & types: Defines type C (type A plus goods carrying facility) and type D (type B plus goods carrying facility) basket trolleys.
  • Goods carrying facility definition: Fixed or movable devices attached to the trolley allowing additional loads inside/outside the basket.
  • Minimum clearances:
    • Below-basket goods carrier: ≥ 45 mm from floor.
    • Behind-basket goods carrier: ≥ 200 mm from floor.
  • Leg room and bumper rules: Minimum unobstructed leg space behind the handle; parts in certain geometric zones must be fitted with bumpers. Movable carriers in nesting position must meet the same clearances as fixed carriers.
  • Test weights & loading:
    • Goods carrying facility test weight: cuboid 65 × 270 × 270 mm, 3 kg, centre of gravity centred.
    • For strength/stability tests load the goods carrier with test weights slightly exceeding the manufacturer's declared capacity.
  • Strength limits:
    • Trolley strength test: permanent deformation of dimensions A and B must be ≤ 7 mm after loading and 1-hour dwell.
    • Goods carrying facility must show no damage or functional loss after loading.
  • Stability tests:
    • Longitudinal and lateral stability performed on a tilting platform.
    • Trolleys must not overturn at an inclination up to and including 10°.
  • Other topics: marking, maintenance, corrosion resistance and referencing EN 1929-1:1998 for common terms and tests.

Applications and users

Who uses EN 1929-3:2005:

  • Trolley manufacturers - design and verify goods carrying facilities meet safety and performance limits.
  • Retailers and procurement teams - specify compliant trolleys for stores (supermarkets, DIY stores).
  • Testing laboratories & conformity assessors - perform strength, stability and clearance tests.
  • Safety engineers and product managers - ensure ergonomic leg room, child-seat safety and load limits.
  • Standards bodies and regulators - harmonize national regulations with CEN requirements.
