Overview

EN 15625:2008/FprA1 - published by CEN (Technical Committee CEN/TC 256) - covers automatic variable load sensing devices for railway braking systems. The standard applies to devices that continuously sense the load of a railway vehicle and provide a control signal to a relay valve so the air pressure used for brake application is varied automatically. The objective is to adjust brake force according to vehicle load to achieve the required braking performance and interoperability with rolling stock subsystems.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and function: Defines the functional role of automatic load sensing devices in pneumatic brake systems - continuous load sensing and signalling for automatic load/empty changeover.
  • Design and dimensions: Specifies requirements for physical design and dimensional interfaces to ensure fit and compatibility with braking subsystems (as applicable within the limits of the standard).
  • Manufacture and materials: Covers manufacturing quality and materials used to meet durability and safety expectations for rail environments.
  • Testing and verification: Requires testing methods and performance checks to confirm correct sensing, signal output and reliable operation under specified environmental and operational conditions.
  • Regulatory/TSI alignment: Amendment A1 and Annex ZA map clauses of EN 15625 to the Essential Requirements of EU Directive 2008/57/EC (railway interoperability) and relevant TSI (Technical Specifications for Interoperability) tables for high-speed, freight wagons and locomotives/passenger rolling stock.
  • Safety and interoperability: Emphasises safety, reliability, technical compatibility and environmental considerations tied to brake performance and rescue/availability requirements.

Practical applications and users

Who uses EN 15625:

  • Rolling stock manufacturers integrating automatic variable load sensing devices into brake systems
  • Brake-component suppliers and designers developing load-sensing valves and relay interfaces
  • Railway operators and maintenance organizations validating component performance for in-service safety
  • Conformity assessment bodies and certification engineers assessing compliance with EU interoperability rules (Directive 2008/57/EC)
  • System integrators ensuring compatibility with vehicle air supply, relay valves and braking control logic

Practical benefits:

  • Improved braking performance and safety through automatic brake-force adjustment
  • Standardised interfaces and tests to support interchangeability and interoperability across rolling stock fleets
  • Clear path to demonstrate conformity with EU rail interoperability requirements

Related standards

  • EN 15625:2008 (base standard) and FprA1 amendment (2010) - prepared by CEN/TC 256
  • Relevant TSI documents and EU Directive 2008/57/EC (interoperability of the rail system) - Annex ZA in the amendment maps EN 15625 clauses to TSI/Directive requirements

Keywords: EN 15625, automatic variable load sensing devices, railway braking, load sensing, relay valve, air pressure, brake performance, CEN, Directive 2008/57/EC.

Foreword
This document (EN 15625:2008/FprA1:2010) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 256
“Railway applications”, the secretariat of which is held by DIN.
This document is currently submitted to the Unique Acceptance Procedure.
This document has been prepared under a mandate given to CEN by the European Commission and the
European Free Trade Association, and supports essential requirements of EU Directive(s).
For relationship with EU Directive(s), see informative Annex ZA, which is an integral part of this document.
The “Recast” Directive 2008/57/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on the interoperability of
th
the rail system within the Community was published on 17 June 2008.

The two previous EU Directives 96/48/EC and 2001/16/EC on the interoperability of the High Speed and
th
Conventional rail systems within the Community will therefore be repealed with effect from 19 July 2010.

At this date the harmonised standards for the railway field will have to refer to the new Directive.

In order to fulfil this requirement, it has been decided to produce Amendments for the ENs that will not have
undergone the revision process by the date of the repeal.

This document gives the necessary elements that have been identified by the CEN Consultants for the
amendment of EN 15625:2008.
