Methods of test for mortar for masonry - Part 7: Determination of air content of fresh mortar
This European Standard specifies two methods for determining the air content of fresh mortars including those containing mineral binders and both dense and lightweight aggregates: Method A "The pressure method" and Method B "The alcohol method". For air content less than 20 %, method A is applicable. For air content of 20% or more, method B is applicable.

Overview
EN 1015-7:1998 (CEN) - Methods of test for mortar for masonry - Part 7: Determination of air content of fresh mortar - specifies standardized procedures to measure the air content of fresh mortar. It applies to mortars containing mineral binders and to mortars with both dense and lightweight aggregates. The standard defines two measurement approaches and the conditions under which each is applicable.
Key topics and requirements
- Two prescribed methods
- Method A - The pressure method: applicable for fresh mortar with air content less than 20%.
- Method B - The alcohol method: applicable where air content is 20% or more.
- Scope coverage: fresh masonry mortars that include mineral binders and both dense and lightweight aggregates.
- Method selection rule: the standard sets the air-content threshold that determines which method is appropriate (below or above 20%).
- Expected content elements: the standard provides requirements for carrying out reproducible air-content measurements and for reporting results in a consistent, comparable way (method choice, test conditions and measured air content).
- Standard identification: published by CEN as EN 1015-7:1998 (also reproduced in various national standards).
Applications
- Quality control in mortar production - ensuring fresh mortar meets design and specification targets for air entrainment.
- Laboratory testing for construction materials - routine and acceptance testing of masonry mortar batches.
- Specification and compliance checks on-site by contractors, masonry inspectors, and testing laboratories.
- Research and development where accurate determination of air content affects mortar workability, durability, thermal properties, and strength.
Who uses this standard
- Mortar and cement manufacturers performing production QC.
- Independent testing and certification laboratories.
- Construction quality assurance personnel and site laboratories.
- Engineers and specifiers writing performance requirements for masonry works.
- Research institutions studying mortar behavior and optimization.
Related standards
- EN 1015-7 is part of the EN 1015 series of mortar test methods; users typically combine it with other EN 1015 parts and national regulations for comprehensive mortar testing and compliance.
