Overview
EN 3475-413:2002 - Wrap back test - is a CEN/AECMA aerospace test method for finished electrical cables with PTFE insulation tape. The standard defines a thermal-age test to detect cracking, porosity and poor adhesion between PTFE tape layers on aircraft cables. It is intended to be used together with EN 3475-100 (general test provisions) and references the voltage proof test in EN 3475-302.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Detection of defects in PTFE insulation tape layers on finished aerospace cables.
- Specimen preparation: Wind a sufficient length of completed cable around itself at least 10 turns so the cable serves as the mandrel.
- Apparatus: Use an air-circulating oven capable of maintaining the required ageing temperature.
- Ageing cycle: Expose the wrapped specimen to (310 ± 5) °C for 3 hours.
- Cooling: After ageing, cool the specimen at ambient temperature for at least 1 hour.
- Visual/physical requirement: After returning to ambient temperature the PTFE insulation shall show no cracking or debonding of layers along the insulation.
- Electrical requirement: The specimen must pass the voltage proof test per EN 3475-302:
- after being wound before ageing;
- after ageing while still wound;
- after being unwound and straightened.
Practical applications
- Quality control and acceptance testing for aerospace electrical cable manufacturers using PTFE tape insulation.
- Environmental/ageing qualification for finished aircraft cables where PTFE layered insulation is used.
- Test laboratories performing certification and type-approval tests for aircraft wiring systems.
- Maintenance and overhaul organizations verifying the integrity of PTFE-wrapped cables after exposure to elevated temperatures or service conditions.
Who should use this standard
- Cable designers and manufacturers in the aerospace sector.
- Test houses and accredited laboratories performing cable ageing and dielectric tests.
- Quality assurance engineers and compliance officers responsible for aircraft electrical system reliability.
- Procurement and certification teams needing documented test methods for supplier specification and acceptance.
Related standards
- EN 3475-100 - General test methods and procedural rules (use together with EN 3475-413).
- EN 3475-302 - Voltage proof test referenced as the electrical check required before/after ageing.
